It’s graduation day

Unity is a volleyball mantra where the sum is more valuable than the individual parts. But eight seniors on Mead's two-time defending champion state qualifiers have taken togetherness to extremes. Their association goes back to elementary school, the year Mead won its first state volleyball title, when they worked as ball girls at the Spokane Arena and fostered a dream.

Riverside girls’ young team claims state title

Bill Kemp has been in the cross country coaching business for a long time. In his 26th year of coaching at Riverside — with no previous distance running experience before he was hired — his teams are still going strong. Riverside boys and girls teams during his tenure have won 22 top four team trophies, with 12 top-two finishes.

Third-year Ferris state high school cross country runner Robert Cosby wanted to emulate his predecessors. "When I was a sophomore, I watched the captains lead the team," Cosby said. "Last year I watched the captains do it."

Six coaches with local ties are Hall of Fame inductees

Ferris baseball coach John Thacker is among six coaches with local ties being inducted into their respective Washington Coaches Association halls of fame. Thacker will be inducted at noon Saturday at the SeaTac Doubletree Inn, if, as he said, "I can make it across the pass without a rock slide coming down on me."

Lanphere, Hale ignite air game as EV trims Rams

East Valley's football persona may be well-grounded, but as West Valley-Yakima discovered on Tuesday, it's a mistake to overlook the pass. Jye Lanphere threw for a season-high 235 yards and Sam Hale was on the receiving end for 170 yards on five catches as the Knights (9-2) defeated the visiting Rams (6-5) 24-6 in a State 3A play-in game at EV.

PASCO – There was no stopping District 7 B boys runners during the state cross country championships, Race winner Brad Serdar led the charge for Reardan, which by a point defended its state title by reversing the three-point loss to St. George's the week before in district.

CV football finishes tied for fourth, in playoffs

There was nothing magical about Central Valley's dramatic turnaround football season. After the frustration of losing their first two Greater Spokane League games, coach Rick Giampietri told the veteran Bears that they wouldn't win another game if they didn't get their shoulder pads lower.

Clarkston comes out clean

Clarkston proved the better mudder early, and its three-touchdown lead over host Cheney less than 15 minutes into their game determined the Greater Spokane League's second 3A playoff football team. That lead nearly evaporated behind the yeoman's effort of Blackhawks running back Donny McKee, but it was enough for a 21-14 triumph.

Seven area teams part of state competitions

As the eastern regional 3A boys high school cross country race wound down on Saturday, a gaggle of West Valley Eagles descended in haste upon the finish line. Not that the Eagles weren't likely to qualify for state, but the closing rush surprised even their coach, Jim McLachlan.

Richland's getting the hang of this shootout thing. Its second consecutive such 1-0 soccer victory, decided by penalty kicks, came over Gonzaga Prep to decide Tuesday's 4A Eastern regional championship.

Greater Spokane League girls teams have gone head to head with the Richland Bombers in each of the last five State 4A soccer tournaments. This year is no exception, although last year's state third-place finishing Gonzaga Prep could get a double dose.

The weather at Deer Park Golf Course held up, and so did the Greater Spokane League's cross country reputation. Conditions were cool but pleasant and, most important, dry and calm during Saturday's Eastern Regional 4A and 3A races.

Lakeside edges Colville for district title

History repeated itself on soggy Deer Park Golf Course when Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) defended its District 7 2A boys cross country championship at Great Northern League champion Colville's expense. The Eagles packed six runners among the race's top 13 to offset the 1-3 finish by Colville's Ryan Cloke and Jake Wilson for a 38-40 triumph.

Central Valley takes stab at two state berths

It's been more than two decades since Central Valley could dream about the possibility of sending both boys and girls cross country teams to state in the same year. Certainly the girls teams have had moments of state glory – a team title in 1982 and a couple of other appearances (1993 and 2002).

Bullpups claim District title

Gonzaga Prep soccer players said they approached the District 8 4A championship match against Greater Spokane League champion University with nothing to lose. By winning 2-0 over the previously unbeaten Titans, they had everything to gain. The minor upset assured the Bullpups (14-2) a week's rest and spot in the state tournament as the region's either No. 1 or 2 entrant. They host Big Nine Conference champion Richland Tuesday at 4 p.m. for the regional title.

Cloke’s run to the forefront aids in Colville’s success

Ryan Cloke is a vital part of a Colville threesome that will determine the Indians' postseason cross country future. Last year the Indians won the Great Northern League, but finished behind Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls in district and state. Lakeside finished third at the State 2A meet, two spots ahead of Colville.

EV, WV football rivalry thriving

The rivalry between East Valley and West Valley football teams is alive and well again, even if there is a disparity in records. EV (6-2, 6-1) is tied for second in the Greater Spokane League. WV (2-6, 2-5) is part of a four-way tie for ninth.

District, regional competitions start next week

The second season begins next week for local high school athletes with the beginning of district and regional competition. Soccer playoffs start Monday, volleyball on Thursday and state qualifying cross country meets are Friday and Saturday and nearly every Valley team will be involved.

Before taking the field at Ferris, the University Titans already knew they were Greater Spokane League girls soccer champions for the second time in school history. By making good on their one scoring opportunity during the game, they achieved an unbeaten regular season for the first time.

This is becoming old hat for the Mt. Spokane volleyball program, which, for the second straight year, caught lightning in a bottle. Trailing two games to none, the Wildcats (9-4) staged an improbable rally to defeat Central Valley 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-4 and a berth in next week's District 8 4A playoffs.

Friday win over Titans fourth straight for Bears

A year ago Camren Ebat was Central Valley High School's quarterback. By the second game of this season he was sharing the job. "It was tough," Ebat admitted after helping the Bears defeat University 31-7 Friday and bring the Greasy Pig football trophy back to CV.

Mead boys capture title

Mead's boys cross country team is built for the long haul. It helped them Wednesday while wresting the Greater Spokane League championship away from Ferris. The Panthers defeated the Saxons 24-33 by taking advantage of their endurance over the final one-third of the Rogers High 5,000-meter course located in Riverside State Park just off Seven-Mile Road.
