Trevor Britton Wins Regional Water Ski Title

Trevor Britton won the Boys 3 overall championship during the 14-state Western Regional water skiing championships. He was one of two Spokane champions during the event in Windsor, Colo., who competed last week at nationals in Florida. Britton finished first in regional jumping at a personal best distance of 143 feet. He was fourth in slalom and was third in tricks with 990 points for his overall title.

Sale Wins 5th Round Of Liberty Cup

The fifth round of the Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Golf Club Liberty Cup was won by Noreen Sale. Sale shot a net round of 65 to advance to the finals of the annual tournament. During the concurrent putting contest, Jean Hatcher and Yvonne Splan shared A flight win with 29.

Bronco All-Stars Place Second At Regionals

The South Side Bronco All-Star team just missed a trip to the national baseball tournament, finishing second during regional competition in Seattle. Both Bronco, ages 11-12, and Mustang, 9-10, qualified out of Spokane for the regional tournament. The Bronco team, forced into the loser's bracket of regionals in the second round, came back to win three straight times for the finals.

Valley Catcher/Fielder On Regional Champion Team

Valley softball player Jennie Shollenberger became a party to history last weekend. The catcher-outfielder is the lone Valley member of the Nitro, a North Side 14-U girls fastpitch softball team that became Spokane's first youth team to become Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Regional champions. The North Spokane team outscored its opposition 71-10 and won six straight games during the B regionals at Franklin Park.

Assistants Filling Top Basketball Coaching Jobs At Riverside, Dp

Football is not the only Great Northern League sport where coaching changes have taken place. In basketball eight-year Riverside coach Brent Monroe and Deer Park's Ben Widman have also stepped down. Monroe announced his decision last spring and has been replaced by his assistant, John Wolfe. Widman resigned for family reasons and his assistant, Jason Thompson, takes over.

Nitro Blasts Way To 14-U Regional Title

A stunning performance lifted the Nitro, a 14-U girls fastpitch softball team, to Spokane's first ASA Regional Tournament championship. The north Spokane team outscored its opposition 71-10 and won six straight games during the tournament at Franklin Park last weekend. It has sent team members scrambling to raise the $4,000 it will take to travel to and compete in the ASA Western Area Championships Aug. 6-10 in Evanston, Wyo.

Six Bandits Named To All-League Teams

American Legion baseball The Browne Mountain Bandits pulled in American Legion AAA Baseball all-league selections. But that didn't get them past the first round of the state-qualifying playoffs. Involved in a rugged first-round series with the Valley Cannons, the Bandits outscored and outhit their foe. But they lost twice by a run, 9-8 and 12-11, and won 10-6 in extra innings.

Valley Cannons Hitter Finds Right Time To End Slump

Ben Miller picked a perfect time to rediscover his batting stroke. In six playoff games he had 16 hits and helped the Valley Cannons qualify for this weekend's Washington State Senior American Legion baseball tournament in Selah. "Ben was in a slump and he absolutely went off," said Cannons coach Robin Lund after his team won a pair of best-of-three series to earn the state trip. "He was on fire for us."

Spokane Blue Is Anything But With Another Championship

Champions were determined during last week's Spokane Valley Girls League double-elimination softball tournaments. Spokane Blue completed an unbeaten 16-Under league season for its third championship in four years and a 56-4 record during that time. The team beat Spokane County Deputy Sheriff's Association for the title.

Cannons, Bandits Rivalry Carries Into Legion Aaa Playoffs

The Valley Cannons and Browne Mountain Bandits continued their season rivalry in the first round of American Legion AAA baseball playoffs. They play the second game of a best-of-three series 6 p.m. tonight at Shadle Park's Al K. Jackson Field, followed by a third game if necessary. Winner will advance to another best-of-three series to determine Spokane's entrant in the Senior State Legion tournament in Selah, Wash.

Mt. Spokane High Team Second In A League

The doors of Mt. Spokane High School have yet to open, but future baseball players at the school have already won a trophy. McDonald's, made up of players from Mt. Spokane, shared the American Legion A League North Division championship. The team ultimately finished second in the end-of-season, four-team tournament.

On To Nationals Spokane Cougars Take 39-11 Record To Fastpitch Tourney In Tennessee

The tournament-seasoned Spokane Cougars, a 16-U fastpitch softball team, are about to face their sternest test. On Monday, the Cougars fly to Chattanooga, Tenn., for national competition. The tournament runs July 30-Aug. 3. "This group is really good," said Steve Fountain, who coaches the Cougars with his wife, Pat. "They can finish in the top 10 if they get the right breaks."

Perfection Tire Upsets Autocraft In Giants Tourney Action

Regular season Spokane Valley Baseball Giants League champion Autocraft found itself in the loser's bracket after two rounds of tournament competition. In a game between Centennial Middle School classmates, Perfection Tire upset Autocraft 7-0 to reach the semifinals. Centennial plays Valley Electric, a 13-2 winner over Broadway Eye Care, Monday at West Valley High for a berth in the tournament finals.

American Legion A Baseball Playoffs Continue Tonight

Division co-champion Food Rainbow/Carsten's Marine is one of four teams qualified for American Legion A League baseball playoffs. The first two games of the playoffs are loser-out, with the survivors then playing a best-of-three series. All games are at Whitworth College. Food Rainbow/Carsten's, made up of players from Central Valley High School, shared the South Division title with Tony Roma, from Shadle Park High, with a 14-2 record and played the Panorama Twins Wednesday.
