Getting their stories straight

Like it or not, news media are changing. There used to be a clear division between print, radio and television. A self-respecting print reporter would never dream of making a video or – oh, the horror – actually appearing on TV, just like a broadcaster wouldn’t be caught dead with a byline in the paper.

New home for antiques

For the longest time, Spencer’s Antiques was an integral part of the Hillyard secondhand and antique dealer community. Located at Garland Avenue and Market Street since 2003, Spencer’s was known to antique and secondhand aficionados for its selection there. But as the state began making room for the north-south freeway owner Kay Kallenbach lost the 8,500-square-foot building, and she wasn’t quite sure what to do next.

Ceremony to pay tribute to neighborhood volunteers

The Neighborhood Services office of the city of Spokane hosts its annual neighborhood awards ceremony Friday at City Hall. “We don’t have specific awards categories, but this is our chance to recognize the volunteers that work with us all year,” said Jonathan Mallahan, director of Spokane’s neighborhood services and code enforcement office. “In reality we could give an award to every single one of our volunteers.”

Hillyard Santa sees busy holiday ahead

Last year, it took a last-minute rally to get enough presents together for Hillyard’s Santa, Clyde Decker. He was hoping to get presents to 750 children, but the demand was huge and by Christmas morning he’d gotten presents to 1,755 children of 563 families. It took an enormous effort – probably one that only Santa could make happen – to get all the presents together.

Wrong date turns out right for family’s holiday

It was dark and it was cold and it was Thanksgiving Day. Marry Garcia had packed her children, 10-year-old twins Eloisa and Abdias, in the car and taken them downtown. A friend had told her about a Thanksgiving dinner held by the Union Gospel Mission for what Garcia calls “unfortunate families,” and she wanted her twins to have Thanksgiving dinner – a treat she couldn’t afford on her own.
