Apple drive puts health in focus

There were apples everywhere. There were apples in boxes in the minivan. There were more apples in boxes at the school. There were green apples and red apples and yellow apples – big ones and small ones – sweet ones and tart ones – and many of them went home with families who received Thanksgiving dinners from the Salvation Army earlier this week. Students at M.E.A.D. (Mead Education Alternative Division) High School put on an apple drive serving two purposes: to get a healthy snack of fresh fruit to families who may otherwise go without, and to put on an educational program about nutrition. Teacher Carole Allen got the idea during a fall planning session.

Business owner organizing Black Friday challenge

Black Friday is the day shoppers traditionally go running frantically all over town for the best deal on everything from toasters to LEGOs to yard furniture to pantyhose. On this particular Black Friday, there’s a group of local business owners who’ve gotten together to shift some of the shopping frenzy the local way. And it’s all Deborah DiBernardo’s idea.

Hillyard Santa sees busy holiday ahead

Last year, it took a last-minute rally to get enough presents together for Hillyard’s Santa, Clyde Decker. He was hoping to get presents to 750 children, but the demand was huge and by Christmas morning he’d gotten presents to 1,755 children of 563 families. It took an enormous effort – probably one that only Santa could make happen – to get all the presents together.
