PULLMAN – A collection of loud roars emerged from the west end zone inside the towering shadow of the Cougar football complex. Senior linebacker Jeremiah Allison came away with the football during team red-zone drills near the end of practice, prompting defensive players in white jerseys to party like they’d just came away with a game-clinching fumble recovery in the Apple Cup.

Paul Petrino paced his entrance into the Kibbie Dome Wednesday afternoon with a similar steady, nonchalant walk he often takes onto the practice field. Usually his head is down, and sometimes he goes over practice notes with assistant coaches while on his way to the middle of the field. Sometimes he revs into a slow jog toward the middle of the field.

Sekou Wiggs decides to leave Vandals basketball

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho sophomore guard Sekou Wiggs announced Monday night on his Instagram account that he is leaving the Idaho basketball program. Wiggs informed Idaho coach Don Verlin of the decision, who confirmed it on Tuesday saying “Sekou has decided to leave the program. We wish him the best.”

Don Monson hosted two Big Sky Conference Tournaments at the Kibbie Dome as coach of Idaho, winning both of them in 1981 and 1982. He took the Vandals to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in the process. I was lucky enough to get my hands on authentic game programs from the era.

Landon Tatum was a little surprised the first time he thought he saw Connor Hill this summer. A 6-foot-7, 235-pound behemoth crossed his path in the Kibbie Dome hallways. Tatum, now the Director of Player Operations for Idaho men’s basketball, was surprised that he didn’t resemble the lanky freshman he played with three seasons ago.

UI details plans to raise $30 million for arena

The University of Idaho is moving forward with plans to aggressively raise funds for a $30 million multiuse on-campus arena, UI president Chuck Staben and athletic director Rob Spear informed the Idaho State Board of Education at a meeting Thursday afternoon. The arena, which would be entirely privately funded and not exceed the $30 million price tag, is slated to be built on a grass lawn adjacently north of the Kibbie Dome.

Idaho coach Don Verlin saw opportunity through challenge, an opportunity his Vandals seized in a 69-58 win over Sacramento State.

Now three quarters of the way through his debut season as Oregon’s women’s basketball coach, Graves is finally starting to find some familiarities between his successful 14-year tenure as Gonzaga’s coach and his current gig.
