Idaho head coach Paul Petrino concentrates on local recruits

Two one-win seasons haven’t changed the way Idaho coach Paul Petrino approaches national letter of intent day. Much like his first two seasons, Petrino formed the base of the recruiting class in December when he announced 10 junior college signings.

Idaho’s Mike Scott takes advantage of his opportunity this season

With the biggest opportunity of his basketball career in front of him, Mike Scott spent this last summer in the only sanctuary he knew. It was a gym at a park just around the way from his Los Angeles home. As a teenager and even through his junior college stint at Antelope Valley College, Scott made the walk through his dangerous neighborhood to spend as many of his spare hours as he could inside the gym, working on his game, getting better.

Vandals use quick start to edge Bears

Mike Scott subtly shook his head in disappointment when reminded of two missed free throws that could’ve changed Idaho’s fate for the worse Saturday evening at the Cowan Spectrum. With 21 points and six assists going into the final 35 seconds, Scott’s aggressive play offensively had Idaho in position to snap its four-game losing streak. That is, until two consecutive missed free throws on the front ends of one-and-ones with under 35 seconds remaining allowed Northern Colorado to turn a 78-72 deficit into a 78-77 game in just 12 seconds.

Idaho falls to North Dakota at home

Minutes after the Cowan Spectrum had emptied, Idaho sophomore guard Sekou Wiggs was back on the court repeatedly taking free-throw shot after free-throw shot. He didn’t want to waste any precious seconds wondering how Idaho’s latest Big Sky Conference game got away from them, this time a 71-63 stumble against visiting North Dakota.

Eagles’ defense does the trick in victory over Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho – When the two highest scoring teams in the Big Sky Conference met at the Cowan Spectrum Saturday night, the head coaches of Idaho and Eastern Washington could only naturally think about one thing: Defense. The specific focus for EWU coach Jim Hayford was Idaho’s stellar senior point guard, Mike Scott. The Eagles forced Scott into four turnovers, roughly four times as many as he averaged coming into the game.

Vandals ride big-shot Mike Scott to win over Weber State

MOSCOW, Idaho – While teammates were swarming and jumping on Mike Scott, the senior Vandals point guard stood stoic and glared down the basket. Moments earlier, he sniped in a 70-foot halftime buzzer beater from the Big Sky logo on the far side of the court that sent the Cowan Spectrum into a frenzy, and sent Idaho into the locker room leading by six. The miraculous heave proved to have monumental implications as Idaho held on to defeat visiting Weber State 86-84 Saturday night at the Cowan Spectrum to finish its opening weekend of Big Sky Conference play at 2-0.

Connor Hill shoots Idaho to win over Idaho State

Maybe Connor Hill should take vacations to Hawaii more often. The Idaho senior shooting guard spent four days on the Hawaiian islands with his family during the team’s nine-day layoff between the game at Northern Kentucky and hosting Idaho State to open up Big Sky Conference play.

Idaho men use balanced scoring against winless Wolves

MOSCOW, Idaho – The life of a freshman walk-on isn’t often luxurious. When Chad Sherwood comes to practice every day, there is little chance the work he puts in that day will earn him regular playing time. Instead, he usually emulates opposing players to help starters such as senior guard Connor Hill prepare for upcoming games.

Idaho fills needs by signing 10 junior college players

Idaho football coach Paul Petrino welcomed 10 junior college players into the fold Wednesday during the 2014 midyear signing period, which allows schools to sign JUCO players who intend to enroll in time for spring football. Among those 10 JUCO signings were four defensive backs, three offensive linemen, two defensive linemen and one running back.

Idaho rallies past UC Davis

MOSCOW, Idaho – When football season ends, the Kibbie Dome football turf is rolled up and stored away. Then, a portion of the stadium is curtained off so a basketball court can be installed. It’s called the Cowan Spectrum, the home of Idaho basketball from December through the end of the season. It made its season debut Saturday when Idaho hosted UC Davis, sporting some new features.
