Bail set at $1 million for suspect in police chase

William E. Pfaff looked almost bored Monday as Magistrate Judge Robert Burton read off the litany of charges against him. Burglary, malicious injury to property, robbery, possession of stolen property, eluding a police officer, grand theft, and assault or battery on a peace officer make up most of the 21 separate felony counts Burton read off to the 36-year-old Pfaff, who leaned on his hand during Monday's video arraignment, tapped his fingers and toyed with a small notepad.

Toddler’s mother defends lies

The mother of 15-month-old Brandon McAdoo, who died from suspected child abuse in January, explained in court Wednesday why she initially lied to police about how her baby was injured. Angela Cowles told emergency workers and sheriff's deputies on Jan. 14 that she slipped on the ice and fell on top of Brandon. Later, she changed her story, saying that two days earlier the baby's father, Barry Lane McAdoo, 30, told her he had injured the child when trying to revive him after he choked on a piece of plastic bag.

Inmate didn’t show indications of suicide

Ronald W. Ross was hauled to the Kootenai County Jail at least four times in the past year. The last time was Saturday. On Sunday afternoon, a fellow inmate discovered the 35-year-old man hanging from a noose fashioned from a bedsheet and tied to the end of his bunk, according to the Coeur d'Alene Police and Kootenai County Sheriff's Department.

Judge quits, ending youth drug court

Kootenai County's juvenile drug court is finished after its judge quit in the wake of concerns about the program's management. First District Judge Benjamin Simpson held his last Juvenile Education and Training (JET) Court session Feb. 16. Simpson declined to comment Monday about why he decided to stop presiding over the program that prosecutors offer to children as an alternative to jail time.

Flames destroy family’s ‘dream house’

A "showcase" home in southeast Spokane burned down in a dramatic fire Sunday afternoon that drew several agencies to fight it and dozens of onlookers. No one was injured, although the homeowners may have lost two cats in the fire that destroyed the two-story brick and frame-built home on South Ashton Circle.

Boy’s father won’t face death penalty

Barry L. McAdoo, accused of killing his 15-month-old son, will not face the death penalty, Kootenai County Prosecutor Bill Douglas has decided. McAdoo, 30, is being held at the Kootenai County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his son, Brandon L. McAdoo, who died Jan. 16 from a blunt injury to his head, according to court records.

Sheriff Rocky Watson sometimes wonders if the current strategy of going after methamphetamine manufacturers in Kootenai County is working. "I'm putting 100 percent of my resources into chasing meth labs. Am I missing 80 percent of the problem?" he asked. "I could be busting little meth labs and missing semis coming through."

Decision postponed on taller buildings

SANDPOINT – Heeding the plea to "go slowly," the Sandpoint Planning Commission decided Tuesday to table a proposal to increase the height limit on downtown buildings in order to better define where tall buildings could be allowed. But Panhandle State Bank CEO Curt Hecker hopes the city isn't too slow for his plans to build a multi-story headquarters for his rapidly growing community bank.

Rocky Mountain Academy to close

The former flagship of behavioral schools in North Idaho has hoisted the white flag. Rocky Mountain Academy in Naples, Idaho, will close its doors Monday. About 20 staff members will be laid off and its remaining 19 students will disperse to other institutions or return home, according to CEDU Educational Services, which owns the school.

Principal faces molestation charges

SANDPOINT – The board of a small Christian school in Sandpoint has granted its principal a leave of absence so he can defend himself against charges that he sexually molested one of the school's students. Sigard A. Jensen, 59, of Athol, has been charged with one count of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor under 16 and one count of an infamous crime against nature. Jensen is out of jail on a $20,000 bond on the condition that he has no contact with anyone younger than 18.

Kralicek gets special sendoff for rehab flight

Parked on the Coeur d'Alene Airport tarmac, police cruisers and a Coeur d'Alene Fire Department ambulance activated their lights in silent tribute Monday morning as Coeur d'Alene Police Officer Michael Kralicek departed for a Colorado rehabilitation hospital. It is unknown how long Kralicek will need to stay at the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., as he recovers from a gunshot wound to the neck, said Don Jiran, a retired Coeur d'Alene Police lieutenant and family friend.

Don’t dump effluent in river, board is told

SANDPOINT – Every alternative should be pursued before dumping treated sewage into the Pend Oreille River, the state-appointed commission for Priest and Pend Oreille waterways told the Southside Water and Sewer District board Monday. "The (Pend Oreille) river, it's already at a critical point," said Brent Baker, a commission member and a local building contractor. "It's already suffering from nutrient loading. It seems like we should move water quality in the other direction."

Idaho Kokanee Population Declines

The kokanee fishing was crummy last year and this coming season is shaping up to be even worse, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. "It's kind of like we've taken a step backwards," said Melo Maiolie, a department biologist.
