The Spokane police officer facing federal charges related to the death of Otto Zehm was arraigned today in federal court.

Authorities are warning Spokane-area residents to be on the lookout for an escaped felon who has mental disorders and should be avoided. Anyone who sees Anthony E. Burke, aka Anthony Garver, should immediately call 911. Spokane County sheriff’s Detective David Thornburg said in a news release Sunday that Burke, 21, was released from federal prison in California on Thursday and disappeared while traveling by bus to Spokane.

The Spokane police officer facing federal charges in connection with the 2006 death of Otto Zehm will remain on the city’s payroll but has been reassigned to desk duty while awaiting trial.

A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed against Spokane County over deputies' actions in a struggle with an epileptic man in 2007 that resulted in his death. The suit was filed this week on behalf of Trent Yohe by his former wife, Serrina Francis, who had a child with Yohe and was appointed to administer Yohe’s estate. She’s being represented by the public interest law firm Center for Justice, which is also representing the mother of Otto Zehm in a similar lawsuit against the Spokane Police Department.

U.S. Attorney James McDevitt announced Monday that a federal grand jury handed down two indictments against veteran Officer Karl F. Thompson Jr., who was the first of several officers to confront Zehm, a 36-year-old Spokane man who had schizophrenia.
