Officials issue warning about escaped felon

Authorities are warning Spokane-area residents to be on the lookout for an escaped felon who has mental disorders and should be avoided. Anyone who sees Anthony E. Burke, aka Anthony Garver, should immediately call 911. Spokane County sheriff’s Detective David Thornburg said in a news release Sunday that Burke, 21, was released from federal prison in California on Thursday and disappeared while traveling by bus to Spokane.

Center for Justice sues over Yohe’s death

A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed against Spokane County over deputies' actions in a struggle with an epileptic man in 2007 that resulted in his death. The suit was filed this week on behalf of Trent Yohe by his former wife, Serrina Francis, who had a child with Yohe and was appointed to administer Yohe’s estate. She’s being represented by the public interest law firm Center for Justice, which is also representing the mother of Otto Zehm in a similar lawsuit against the Spokane Police Department.

Stabbing death results in seven-year sentence

Benjamin R. Howard, 24, pleaded guilty today to second-degree manslaughter in connection with the June 3, 2008, stabbing death of Kenneth P. Jordan. Howard received a sentence of about seven years in prison.

Lawyer off case for city

A majority of Spokane City Council members expressed concern Wednesday when they learned the city has agreed to pay up to $200,000 in public funds to a private attorney who no longer represents them in a federal civil lawsuit filed by the mother of Otto Zehm. The City Council voted twice to pay Carl Oreskovich to represent the city in the civil case. But Oreskovich said Wednesday his only client is the officer facing civil and criminal charges in Zehm’s death.

Feds indict Zehm officer

A Spokane police officer should stand trial on charges of violating the civil rights of mentally ill janitor Otto Zehm and lying about the confrontation that resulted in Zehm’s death, a grand jury has decided. U.S. Attorney James McDevitt announced Monday that a federal grand jury handed down two indictments against veteran Officer Karl F. Thompson Jr., who was the first of several officers to confront Zehm, a 36-year-old Spokane man who had schizophrenia.

Man survives fall into Interstate 90 traffic

The Washington State Patrol had to close two lanes of eastbound Interstate 90 for several hours this morning after a man jumped or fell from the Argonne Road overpass. After the man fell, he was struck by a vehicle. He was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center. Emergency responders were unable to determine whether the man fell or jumped, a dispatcher said.

The crowd's roars drowned out the sound this morning of the world-class athletes pouring into Lake Coeur d'Alene. Suddenly, the gray-green waves erupted into a frothy white as more than four thousand arms beat the water into mist. "Stay safe. Have fun because you are going to be an iron man," the announcer bellowed as the neoprene-clad mass started the 7th annual Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene.

It took a Spokane jury about an hour today to decide in favor of Rosauers Supermarkets in a lawsuit brought by a family who claimed their 11-year-old daughter was unlawfully detained by employees of the grocery store chain who accused her of being a prostitute.

Disputed conviction gets man 25 years

Tears streamed down the face of defense attorney David Partovi as his client, 22-year-old Tyler W. Gassman, cried today and listened to his sister plead for justice. “I don’t know what to say,” Partovi told Superior Court Judge Michael Price after his client was ordered to serve nearly 26 years in prison. “I just want the record to reflect and mankind to know that this is the worst thing I’ve ever seen come out of the courts. For the first time in my entire career, I’m ashamed to be an officer of this court.”

About a dozen candidates for local offices waited Monday morning for the door of the Spokane County Election’s Office to open to officially launch their campaigns. By the end of the day, By the end of the day, 56 candidates had filed for offices including small-town mayors and council members, judges, school boards and fire commissioners.

Hot weather to last all week

While spring still has 20 or so days left, it appears summer has arrived for the foreseeable future. Unseasonably hot temperatures are expected to continue all week in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene with highs hovering at or above 80 degrees and lows in the low 50s, according to the National Weather Service.

Man’s body found in Pend Oreille River

The Bonner County Sherriff’s Office and emergency personnel have found the body of an adult male in the Pend Oreille River near Johnson Creek. Lt. Doug Harris said the body was spotted about 9:15 a.m. just off the north shore of the river at mile post 19 on U.S. Highway 2. An employee with the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad spotted the body and called dispatchers.

Edward A. Saner admitted Tuesday to committing seven pharmacy robberies in the Inland Northwest. Creative detective work helped crack the case.
