Gonzaga women hold off Idaho in season opener

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team leaned on senior Haiden Palmer and she led her team to an opening 64-56 victory Friday over an Idaho Vandals team that just wouldn’t go away. Palmer led all scorers with 18 points, but most of those came in a second half that started with the Vandals raining jump shots and 3s to eventually take a 37-36 lead before Gonzaga finally found its rhythm in front of 5,607 at McCarthey Athletic Center.

Dustin McConnell, Colton McCargar take lead for Whitworth Pirates

Their coach calls them “Flash and Substance.” One plays tenaciously and piles points up quietly. The other creates points in a flurry. One has curly blond locks and the other has a crew cut. About the only thing similar between Whitworth’s senior guard duo of Dustin McConnell and Colton McCargar is that they are both left handed.

Five keys to success for Whitworth men’s basketball team

1 Follow the leaders. Younger players need to follow the flow of the game provided by senior guards Colton McCargar and Dustin McConnell. 2 Develop big men. The key to that development will be getting 6-foot-8 junior forward Taylor Farnsworth healthy after his shoulder injury. The Pirates also need to find him help in the paint along with 6-7 Adam Wilks and 6-6 forward Brandon Loiler. Freshmen getting a chance to contribute will be 6-5 Christian Jurlina, 6-7 Riley Moreen and 6-10 Drew Sears.
