No two games typified the all-or-nothing year the Washington State women’s basketball team has had than the series it played against Oregon, the Cougar’s opening-round opponent Thursday in the Pac-12 Tournament.

Washington State’s high-scoring guard tandem of Lia Galdeira and Tia Presley were named today to the 15-member All Pac-12 team. It marks the first time in school history that two players were named to the same all-conference squad.

Graves, three Zags players earn plaudits

With the school’s 10th straight West Coast Conference regular-season championship trophy in hand, Gonzaga women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves earned another piece of hardware and three Bulldogs earned accolades, as well. Fellow coaches tabbed Graves as WCC Coach of the Year for the eighth time Monday, and named senior guard Haiden Palmer, the Zags’ leading scorer, and junior forward Sunny Greinacher to the All-WCC first team. Senior guard Jazmine Redmon received honorable mention.

Seems like Pirates have done this before

The double-champion Whitworth Pirates men’s and women’s basketball teams learned Monday that they both will be playing familiar foes this week in the NCAA Division III national tournament. The No. 12 Whitworth (22-5) men will travel to Dallas to play Trinity University (19-9) on Friday. The host school for that pod, No. 16 University of Texas-Dallas (25-3), will play Chapman (18-9) on Friday. The winners meet on Saturday.

The No. 22 Gonzaga women’s basketball team found itself in a track meet with upset-minded Pacific but somehow found enough points Saturday to win 81-77 at McCarthey Athletic Center. Having cut down the nets Thursday night after clinching its 10th straight West Coast Conference title, coach Kelly Graves said he had to focus his team on playing the tough Tigers team with the additional distraction of Senior Night.

Saturday evening was a good night to be a Whitworth Pirate. The Whitworth men’s team rallied to retake the lead with under a minute to go and senior guard Colton McCargar iced it with free throws to beat Puget Sound 71-68 in the final of the Northwest Conference Tournament.

The Gonzaga women's basketball team defeated Pacific 81-77 on Saturday, wrapping up an undefeated home season at 16-0. GU (26-4 overall, 16-2 WCC) has won 10 consecutive WCC titles.

Jaz Age ends

With her team’s offense struggling and Gonzaga up only six points Thursday night against Saint Mary’s, senior guard Jazmine Redmon started driving to the basket. Gaels guard Kate Gaze hammered Redmon, who threw up a prayer as her body flew toward the hardwood. The shot hit the rim and bounced in. As she lay on the floor amid a roar from the crowd, Redmon didn’t wince in pain or complain to the referees.

The Whitworth Pirates men’s and women’s basketball teams both play tonight for automatic berths into the Division III NCAA tournament. The men’s team (21-5, 14-2) is host to the Puget Sound Loggers (15-11, 10-6) at 7 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Gonzaga women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves ran into the stands and high-fived fans as his players climbed a ladder to snip apart the net to celebrate their 10th consecutive conference championship. The No. 22 Bulldogs captured the West Coast Conference regular-season title by answering several rallies by Saint Mary’s to win 75-65 in the McCarthey Athletic Center.

With visions of postseason dancing in their heads, two area Division I women’s basketball teams hope to wrap up conference titles while the other two continue to fight to upgrade their tournament seedings. The No. 22 Gonzaga Bulldogs have already won a share of their 10th-straight West Coast Conference championship and the players could cut down the nets as early as Thursday night.

The Whitman Missionaries (16-8, 11-4) threw last year’s conference player of the year at the middle of the Whitworth defense, but Ben Eisenhardt’s 30 points weren’t enough as the Pirates won 79-76.

Picked to win the Big Sky Conference, the Eastern Washington Eagles went from soaring favorites to the stark reality of dealing with young players and an injury to a key senior. The Eagles crashed to earth with a 0-5 start to the nonconference season and sputtered to a 4-5 record to start conference play. But coach Wendy Schuller inserted a familiar name to the starting lineup and the Eagles have started winning.

In a battle of ranked opponents, the undefeated Whitman Missionaries women’s basketball team pulled away for an 84-69 road victory over the Whitworth Pirates. Whitworth (18-6, 12-3) still had a mathematical shot for a tie in the Northwest Conference standings, but the Missionaries (24-0, 14-0) ended any hopes of the upset with timely shooting and aggressive rebounding.

Area men: Whitworth rally one for the ages

In a game for the ages, the Whitworth Pirates men’s basketball team somehow trudged its way out of sure defeat to take the game to overtime and eventually steal a 105-101 victory over George Fox. Down 11 points with under a minute to play, the Pirates somehow plundered enough points to give senior Dustin McConnell a chance. He buried a step-back 3-pointer to tie the game and send it to overtime on senior night.
