The Whitworth Pirates took their pass-happy offense on the road last week and stubbed their toes with seven dropped passes, nine penalties and several missed tackles but found a way to beat Whittier 30-17.

Weaver sparks Gonzaga Prep to 17-0 win

The battle of preparatory schools turned into a highlight reel for Gonzaga Prep’s Evan Weaver, who carried his team to a 17-0 victory over Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma on Friday night. The junior defensive lineman blocked an attempted field goal in the first quarter and the ball bounced back into his hands. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder then rumbled for a 78-yard touchdown and scored all the points the Bullpups would need.

Wounded bull eludes bow hunter

A morning of what appeared to be a promising bow hunt Wednesday for a Coeur d’Alene man turned into a day-long ordeal that ended with a hunt he will never forget and will always regret. Wes Sifford, 24, had earlier in the week scouted an area of the Coeur d’Alene National Forest south of Interstate 90 and found ample signs of elk. He returned Wednesday and parked his truck about an hour before sunrise. Immediately, Sifford said he heard bulls bugling below him.

Whitworth opened the Rod Sandberg era with a dominant defensive and offensive show Saturday as the Pirates pillaged Lewis & Clark 63-10 in the opening football game for both teams. Behind Alan Stanfield’s spread offense, the Pirates racked up 357 passing yards, with several receivers having big days from four Pirates quarterbacks who played in front of 1,940 at the Pine Bowl.

Gonzaga Prep rallies to win

Liam Bell, in his first start at quarterback, threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nick Johnson late in the third quarter and the Gonzaga Prep defense made it stand up in a 24-21 season-opening victory over the visiting Richland Bombers on Friday night. The Bombers struck first in both halves to take leads, but the Bullpups fought their way back to secure the win.

The Rod Sandberg era is set to begin Saturday as the Whitworth Pirates host league foe Lewis & Clark at the Pine Bowl. Except for what appears to be a short-term injury to starting cornerback Jerrell Norman, the expected key contributors have made it healthy through fall camp.

League shakeup assures new champ will emerge

Having lost league champion Wilbur-Creston to its ascension to 11-man football, the Northeast 1B South league welcomes two members from the north as several schools will now compete for the top spot. The league welcomes both Wellpinit from the Northeast 1B North last year. And, the eight-man football league also gets Columbia, which will play separate from Inchelium for the first time since 2009.

Panthers starting where they left off

Cusick’s season ended with a humbling 80-28 loss to Neah Bay in the state quarterfinals, but they’ll get a chance at redemption when the Panthers open this season on Sept. 5 with the same Neah Bay. Cusick Coach Sonny Finley said the early schedule will be an good test for his team as he tries to unseat Republic as the champion of the Northeast 1B North in eight-man football.

Touchet, Colton, Riverside Christian figure to battle for Southeast 1B title

For the first time in six years, Colton coach Clark Vinning will field an eight-man football team without one of his players named Straughan. The brothers Straughan, Josh and Jake, had roamed the gridiron for the Wildcats dating back to 2008. Josh is now playing for Stillman College, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Jake, who graduated this spring, will play basketball at Idaho.

A week before Whitworth players arrived, new head coach Rod Sandberg invited all of his assistants and their wives over for dinner. He gave the wives a Pirate coffee mug and a note, which thanked them in advance for the impact on their lives from taking their husbands away for the next several months.

Head-injury awareness has been heightened in what many view as a violent sport. Concussions have been further thrust into the spotlight through litigation by former players who claim the National Football League overlooked head injuries that have caused debilitating effects.

In a battle of first-half champions, the Spokane Indians looked like they angered the baseball gods as they were humbled 9-1 Wednesday night by the Hillsboro Hops. The Hops, of Hillsboro, Oregon, produced timely hitting, received some help from the Indians’ defense and got a dominating performance from starter Ryan Doran to cruise to the easy win.

Indians’ pen falters in loss to Canadians

The Spokane Indians started strong but faded in the 100-degree heat on dog night Tuesday and dropped a 11-6 game to the rival Vancouver Canadians. Jason Hoppe got the first start of his professional career and the lanky kid from Rice, Minnesota, left after four innings with a 4-2 lead. But his fellow relievers were in a giving mood.

Four Spokane teams vying for junior American Legion title

Spokane has a huge weekend of baseball coming up as the Lilac City hosts the junior American Legion baseball state championships. Four teams from the Spokane area, and the team from Asotin, will play in the 16-team, double-elimination tournament that starts Saturday at both Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field and Whitworth University.

New captain on board: Sandberg brings bevy of players, coaches and philosophies to Pirates

Less than a month away from the first practice, new Whitworth University football coach Rod Sandberg has 45 new recruits headed to north Spokane as he begins the process of molding the Pirates in his image. Whitworth hired Sandberg last December after the departure of John Tully, who roamed the Pine Bowl for 19 years and set a school mark with 100 wins compared to 83 losses.
