Baseball notes: Pitching will likely decide postseason fate

Heading into the last week of games, two coaches have turned their eyes to the postseason as a couple of Greater Spokane League foes continue to battle for the final playoff positions. Gonzaga Prep coach Brian Munhall stated his pitchers as a team have an earned-run average in the high ones and his hitters appear to be peaking at the right time.

Head in the game

Ferris catcher Alex Jondal leaned over the plate, holding the bat high in his long arms. He readied himself for the pitch from Mead’s Justin Dolezal. But the ball got away and plunked Jondal, who didn’t flinch before he took off for first base.

Baseball: Saxons get past Panthers, end skid

Mead batters jumped all over Ferris’ Griffin Davis to start the game Tuesday, but the Saxons’ bats rescued Davis who ended up getting a complete-game victory in the 10-2 win. The victory ended a three-game skid for Ferris, (10-7, 9-6 Greater Spokane League) which still could wiggle into a tie for third place in the GSL with Lewis and Clark (12-5, 11-4), which beat Shadle Park (12-5, 10-5) on Tuesday. The Saxons are mathematically eliminated from catching Gonzaga Prep (15-2, 14-1).

Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew favored to win Bloomsday

If you’ve conquered Doomsday Hill enough times during a 12-kilometer race on the first Sunday in May, your name almost becomes familiar in Bloomsday circles. Last year, Jon Neill, who serves as the elite athlete coordinator, predicted that 2012 champion Allan Kiprono, of Kenya, would repeat. But Belete Assefa raced to the front last year to become the first Ethiopian to win Bloomsday.

Baseball notes: Shadle’s Evan Douglas lets his bat do the talking

Evan Douglas is one of those athletes who make baseball look easy. The Shadle Park senior has been a four-year starter at shortstop for coach Ron Brooks and Douglas quietly goes about his business, which usually includes smashing a baseball past the other team’s outfielders.

GSL baseball: Payton Mackin pitches Highlanders past North Central

Baseball notes: Despite limited play from MVP Justin Blatner, Bullpups rise to top of GSL

Just as most Greater Spokane League coaches predicted, Gonzaga Prep has scratched its way to the top of the standings. But the Bullpups have done it by using only half of the baseball talents of reigning league MVP Justin Blatner. The sidewinding left-handed pitcher, who has committed to play for Gonzaga, tweaked his right oblique in March. As a result, coach Brian Munhall has refused to send Blatner to the plate this season.
