Matching supersonic waves with safety

With the power of a motorcycle and the speed nearly to match, personal watercraft drivers are the drag racers of the water. That speed and maneuverability can turn a hot summer afternoon into an epic day to remember. Or, that much power behind inexperienced hands can instantly transform the thrill into a tragedy.

Team of mostly ex-NAU players tops one with ex-Zags at Hoopfest

The magic of McCarthey Athletic Center got lost on the way to Riverfront Park as a team of mostly former Northern Arizona players beat two former Gonzaga players for the Hoopfest men’s elite championship on Sunday. Hot early shooting gave Roots Basketball an early lead. But Spokane Club Elite, featuring former Zags Cory Violette and Blake Stepp, made a run to get close.

Perfect day to play some street ball

Some 6,859 teams stormed 458 courts Saturday as the 25th installment of the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament engulfed downtown Spokane. Many of the 26,810 Hoopfest players weren’t much bigger than the ball. Others had crossover dribbles that long since qualified for AARP.

Chiefs depend on host families to house, help players

Behind almost every bone-rattling slam into the boards and hat trick by the Spokane Chiefs is a local family that makes sure the hockey players get to practice, eat proper meals and complete necessary schoolwork. The yearning to someday play in the NHL draws teenagers from as far away as Eastern Europe to towns like Spokane and Moose Jaw before they even finish high school.

After Gwynn’s death, area coaches to warn players about smokeless tobacco

Baseball legend Tony Gwynn turned hitting into an art form. His engaging smile and high-pitched voice made him an approachable sports legend young players wanted to emulate. Gwynn died Monday from cancer in his cheek that he previously blamed on decades of chewing smokeless tobacco. His death at 54 has shifted talk of his sweet, effortless swing to the lingering image of a sport perpetually stained by smokeless tobacco use.

Roughing it: Keys to unplugging from the grid

Living off the grid teaches skills largely lost in a world dominated by automation. This is the beginning of a semi-regular series of outdoors stories dedicated to exploring different aspects of that simplicity. Every year, it seems, Idaho Public Television anchors its annual fund-raising efforts on the cabin-building skills of Dick Proenneke in the fabulous documentary “Alone in the Wilderness.”

State 3A baseball: Mt. Spokane claws way to third place

PASCO – The Mt. Spokane Wildcats essentially had to win the game twice, but found a way to end their magical season with a victory over Shorewood on Saturday to finish third in the State 3A baseball championships. The Wildcats (21-6) lost a 4-3 heartbreaker Friday against O’Dea for a chance at their first state baseball championship. But they rallied with the 9-4 win Saturday over the Thunderbirds.

Wildcats’ season ends in a rundown

PASCO – Mt. Spokane’s chase of its first state title in baseball ended with a 4-3 semifinal loss after a bizarre rundown with two outs in the final inning that involved every O’Dea infielder before the game ended with a numbing thud. Down 4-1 to O’Dea going into the final inning, Jordan Fitzpatrick and Blake Macdonald singled to set up Drew Rasmussen, who smashed a ball over the right fielder for a double that scored two runs to make it 4-3.

All hands on deck for Mt. Spokane at 3A state baseball final four

When you are that “other guy,” the one who pitches behind Mt. Spokane’s Drew Rasmussen, it can be easy to get lost somewhere between the base paths and the stat sheets. But when the Wildcats needed a win last week to advance to the state playoff finals, coach Alex Schuerman relied on No. 2 pitcher Cooper Smith. He kept Kennewick close for four innings until Wildcat teammate Connor Cantu went Hollywood with a grand slam to win it 7-4 in Mt. Spokane’s last at bat.

Nine area teams in state baseball playoffs

All the suicide squeezes, sacrifice flies, double steals and walk-off home runs have finally led several Spokane area teams to this Saturday: a spot in the state playoffs and a chance to hang a banner at its schools. Big schools like Lewis and Clark, Gonzaga Prep, Mt. Spokane, Cheney and East Valley, must travel in quests to earn State trophies. While smaller schools Freeman, Northwest Christian, Colfax and Colton, get to play near home.

LC, G-Prep make state

Long dominated on the mound by teams to the south, Spokane squads did their best to erase that history Saturday as Gonzaga Prep won twice and Lewis and Clark once to send both Greater Spokane League 4A schools to the state tournament’s round of 16. After losing the district championship game last week to LC’s Tigers, G-Prep’s Bullpups had the long road. But they beat the Richland Bombers 9-5 in the first game Saturday and later trounced Walla Walla 13-4 after LC had earlier beaten the Blue Devils 4-1 to advance.

Baseball notes: Bullpups ready for Bombers

Heading into the biggest Saturday of the year thus far in high school baseball, Gonzaga Prep will end up playing the same team with which it split a preseason series before the Bullpups started their slate of Greater Spokane League games. And that series with Richland was by design, Gonzaga Prep coach Brian Munhall said.
