Palmer broke the mold at Gonzaga

The Spokane area has in recent years produced several Division 1-caliber women’s basketball players who didn’t receive more than a passing interest from what has become “The Program” in these parts: No. 24 Gonzaga. Coach Kelly Graves said he loves to recruit “long wings.” Graves craves taller players who can handle the ball, sometimes play inside, but most important find scoring opportunities for others.

Cougars can’t catch Miners

PULLMAN – The Washington State men’s basketball team came out flat and just couldn’t make enough second-half shots to matter as it lost 64-51 at home against Texas-El Paso on Saturday. The Miners (7-5) appeared to focus on preventing the Cougars from getting the ball to leading scorer DaVonte Lacy, who finished 14 points less than his season average of 20.2 a game.

Palmer helps Gonzaga women turn tables on WSU

PULLMAN – Haiden Palmer scored a quiet 20 points to lead the No. 25 Gonzaga women’s basketball team to a hard-fought 70-62 road victory at Washington State. With fog- and snow-covered roads, the Gonzaga faithful easily outnumbered the fans for WSU inside Beasley Coliseum for a game that had to compete with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

Whitworth introduces new football coach

A well-built young man stood on the side of the crowd and approached new Whitworth University football coach Rod Sandberg from the side. Sandberg knew him immediately, called him by name and embraced him. The young man was Todd Kinley, a youth pastor and assistant football coach at Colfax High School. Kinley played linebacker for Sandberg in 1995 at Wheaton (Ill.) College and heard about the news conference Tuesday announcing Sandberg’s hire.

College.

Zags awaken with defense

Coming off a crushing defeat to No. 6 Stanford, the Gonzaga women’s basketball team came out cold Monday but rallied behind defense to run away in a blowout 87-43 win over visiting UC Riverside. The Zags couldn’t hit anything early. Lindsay Sherbert’s first 3-point attempt caught only air.

Gonzaga women face biggest challenge at Stanford

Having returned triumphantly from a road trip that toppled two Big 10 powers, Kelly Graves and the Gonzaga women’s basketball team now face their biggest test of the season as the team travels to play Stanford at 1 p.m. Saturday. No. 23 Gonzaga and No. 6 Stanford come into the game with one loss each. The Zags’ (8-1) loss came to then-No. 11 Oklahoma, while the Cardinal’s (7-1) loss came last month to No. 1 Connecticut. Sources: Chris Tormey in mix for Whitworth football coaching job

The search for the head football coach at Whitworth University could be over by the end of the week and one of three finalists is former Idaho and Nevada head coach Chris Tormey, sources have confirmed. Tormey spent most of Wednesday on the Whitworth campus, according to two sources who asked not to be named. A source close to the search indicated Whitworth officials want to make an offer to one of the three candidates by Friday. The sources would not identify the other two candidates.

Gonzaga women set defensive record

Even with a sloppy beginning, the No. 24 Gonzaga women’s basketball team gave up the fewest points in school history Saturday as it crushed visiting Colgate 81-31 in nonconference play. The Zags’ length caused the Raiders (1-5) fits all afternoon as Gonzaga players altered shots and their long arms tipped pass after pass, which led to fast-break points on the other end.

It seems like an eternity since the No. 24 Gonzaga women’s basketball team beat Eastern Washington 78-58 exactly one week ago. But the respite is ending. The 3-1 Zags’ upcoming 2 p.m. game Saturday against Colgate at the McCarthey Athletic Center will start a stretch of seven games in 18 days that will test the endurance of coach Kelly Graves’ squad.

And the two players just happened to be seniors getting their last chance to roam the FieldTurf in Martin Stadium: Casey Locker and Damante Horton.
