Firefighter’s layoff still an issue in Millwood

When Millwood town council members laid off firefighter Tony Perry last year, they said it was because of a budget crunch. Perry contends it is because the three full-time firefighters decided to form a union. Perry was the union president when he was given notice in December that his position had been cut.

When Linda Saffle can't find the words to express her gratitude, she gives out hugs. In recent months, Saffle has embraced co-workers, parents and friends. Her recovery from breast cancer has been a communal effort, one that she could've never done alone, Saffle says. Saffle's family made sure she never had to go alone to a doctor's appointment or chemotherapy. Her co-workers donated vacation time, which allowed Saffle to heal without worrying about how to pay the bills.

Records show history of abuse

James V. Adams has a history of assaulting his family. Spokane juvenile court records show Adams often threatened to kill his stepfather. He pleaded guilty to assaulting an ex-girlfriend. Now, the 20-year-old Adams is accused of assaulting his 3-month-old son, who is in "very critical condition," according to one law officer.

Fire-district plan earns preliminary OK

The Boundary Review Board gave preliminary approval Monday to Spokane Valley's proposal to permanently become part of two fire districts. Spokane Valley canceled a public vote on the fire district issue at the last moment this spring after worrying that the election process could be declared invalid because it hadn't gone through the Boundary Review Board.

Man accused of attacking ex-girlfriend

A 27-year-old Spokane man was arrested Sunday after his ex-girlfriend told police she'd been raped and stabbed. Michael Lee West Jr. was arrested on an unrelated Washington state Department of Corrections warrant just before noon Sunday after he was found hiding in the storage area of an East Central Neighborhood apartment complex. His ex-girlfriend identified West as the man who attacked her, police said.

WSP briefly closes I-90 exit

Acrid white smoke wafted from the parking lot of the Washington State Patrol port of entry on Interstate 90 Wednesday afternoon. As a precaution, the weigh station, a highway on-ramp and the nearby Centennial Trail were closed for several hours.
