Cominco Profits Shoot Up

A surprising jump in wholesale fertilizer sales boosted profits by 153 percent at Cominco Fertilizers Ltd. during the second quarter of 1994.

The Calgary-based firm, with a large sales and distribution center in Spokane, reported earnings of $36.6 million (U.S.) on sales of $289 million for the quarter ended June 30, 1994.

That compared to earnings of $14.5 million on sales of $117.8 million a year ago.

The results reflect the recent purchase of Crop Production Services Inc., a major U.S. retailer of agricultural inputs.

But the biggest gains came on wholesale sales. The company racked up $314.2 million in wholesale sales during the first six months of 1994, up from $266.9 million in the same period last year.
