Pumped Up Or Pumped Down, This Weekend Is Action-Packed
Here’s one event that isn’t shy in admitting what it’s all about.
Pure, unadulterated sex appeal.
That’s not hard to deduce from the names of the contests at the 1994 CityWide Summer Dance Party at the Convention Center tonight.
Hot Body/Pretty Legs in Pumps contest. Hard Body contest. Free Style Dance contest. Oh, yeah, there’s a Free Style Rapping contest, too.
“If you can dance, rap, or just look good and know it, don’t miss out,” urges the flier. Sounds like an episode of “The Ricky Lake Show.”
You’ll pay $6 to get in if you have college, high school or military identification. Otherwise, admission is $8. There’s also a $5 entry fee for the contests. Top prize is $100 for each contest.
The dance runs from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Or, something a little calmer
Things are bound to be lively at the Colville Rendezvous, but it’s likely you won’t have to worry about how your legs look in pumps at this community celebration.
There will be plenty of good, smalltown fun at the Colville City Park from 10 a.m. to midnight today and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Headlining the Rendezvous is Eagle Ridge, a popular country music band that will appear three times throughout the day on Saturday.
Not only does the band play great music, but it has a wide array of impressions of singers you’d love to hear - Willie Nelson, Kitty Wells and Johnny Cash, to name a few.
There also will be an encampment with teepees, demonstrations of early crafts and an Indian medicine man. Free entertainment, sporting events, plus more than 100 arts and crafts and food booths will keep everyone busy.
For the kids, there’s a petting zoo, a fun run and free swimming.
Colville isn’t far, about an hour north on U.S. Highway 395.
I know what you’re thinking
If you want to try something a little different this weekend, you could hit the Psychic Fair at the Spokane Convention Center.
Your $15 admission gets you three “impressions” or readings. The fair runs from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday.
Art, art everywhere
You’ve heard of Coeur d’Alene’s Art on the Green (if you haven’t, keep reading Weekend. You’ll find it a few pages ahead), but do you know about the fourth annual Coeur d’Alene Downtown Street Fair?
It started off as spillover from the Art on the Green, but now has assumed a life and personality of its own. More than 60 artisans will display their arts and crafts - everything from glass art to handpainted clothes and jewelry to woodwork.
Other excitement includes live entertainment and a bus shuttle connecting Art on the Green and A Taste of the Coeur d’Alenes food fair to the street fair.
The fair is today and Saturday from 9 a.m. to dark and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s located on Sherman Avenue (between Second and Seventh streets), Fifth Street (between Lakeside and Front) and Second Street (between Lakeside and Sherman). There is no admission charge.
Kids and tunes
Spokane Public Radio and Music for Youth invite the public to the finale of this summer’s KPBX Kids Concerts at the Riverfront Park Clock Tower today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The concert by Spokane Brass Works will feature movie themes, marches and ragtime. It will be a fun, interactive performance for kids of all ages. And it’s free.
Ignore the losing streak
The Spokane Indians are at home Sunday and into next week. They finish up with the Everett Giants Sunday and Monday and take on the Boise Hawks Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sunday’s game is 6 p.m., Monday and Tuesday’s are at 7:05 and Wednesday’s - the businessperson’s special - is at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $3.50 and $5.50.
Later next week
The Corbin Art Center is featuring the River Ridge Association of Fine Art Juried Exhibition from Aug. 1-31. The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the artists Aug. 11 from 6-8 p.m.
The painting exhibition features watercolors, oils, pastels and Prisma pencil work. The center, a program of the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, is housed in the historic D.C. Corbin mansion, W507 Seventh Ave. The gallery is free and open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Here’s advance warning for The Omak Stampede, which kicks off Aug. 11 with a 10-mile parade from Okanogan to Omak. A carnival also will have started by then, and there will be traditional dancing ceremonies at 7 p.m.
Look here for more details on the Stampede next Friday.
Inside/outside Step back in time: Silverwood Theme Park has fun things to do for both the active and the more sedentary. The park has rides, food and plenty of places to just sit and watch others. It’s open daily at 11 a.m. Admission is $18.90, $9.45 for kids and seniors. Who’s a better Jack Ryan? “Clear and Present Danger,” which opened Wednesday theatrically, is Harrison Ford’s second stint as the Tom Clancy character Jack Ryan. Compare his performance to that of Alec Baldwin, who established the role in “The Hunt for Red October.”
