Skyhawks Move Into Semis
The Spokane Skyhawks U-21 women’s soccer team advanced to the semifinal of the Wedgwood Keele Classic in England.
Spokane moves on as the No. 2 seed from its pool after a 1-all tie Friday night against the Millwall Lionesses of London.
Millwall, which earned the No. 1 seed because of goal differential during round-robin play, scored late in the first half. The Skyhawks tied the match midway through the second half on a Jennifer Tissue goal off Jeannie Rein’s corner kick.
Spokane likely plays Leasowe Pacific of Liverpool in today’s semifinal.
Horse racing: Leading jockey Marty Wentz saved his season-long winning streak at Playfair Race Course when he rode Bestoftheprairie to an easy victory in the featured ninth race.
Wentz, who had ridden at least one winner in the first 21 days of the Spokane horse racing season, had two second places and a third to his credit before taking Bestoftheprairie to her six-length triumph. Bestoftheprairie led most of the way and completed six furlongs in 1:12 1/5. Bestoftheprairie paid $4.40 after taking her third straight win.
He’s A Rev Too and Tarab became the first three-time winners of the Playfair meet. He’s A Rev Too scored in the fifth race. Tarab caught 12-1 pace-setter Rite Outa Site and Wentz in the final strides of the eighth race.
Baseball: Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls have tough tasks if they intend to win the Idaho State American Legion tournament at Twin Falls.
Both came up four runs short on Saturday, although in different fashion. Post Falls (32-22) blew a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost to the defending champion Boise Gems 7-3. CdA (29-29) fell behind Blackfoot 7-0 after six innings and lost 9-5.
Both teams must win six consecutive games to claim the state title.
Against Boise (33-14), PF starter Ryan Kempton (14-3) had a shutout ruined, in part, by three errors. The CdA Lumbermen couldn’t take advantage of their nine hits and seven errors by Blackfoot (32-18).
