Seth van Neerden tied the American record of 1 minute, 1.40 seconds in the 100-meter breaststroke and world record holder Jenny Thompson overcame a recently broken arm to win the 100 freestyle as the National Swimming Championships began in Indianapolis.

Allison Wagner won the 400 individual medley and Chad Carvin the 200 freestyle on the opening night of the seven-day meet, which will decide the United States teams for the world championships next month and the Pan American Games in March.

Via Borghese led from start to finish for a two-length victory over Blazing Kadie in the $138,350 Diana Handicap at Saratoga racetrack.
