Grain Elevators: Under Reconstruction
A rash of ownership changes occurred among Inland Northwest grain elevator companies in 1994, affecting hundreds of farmers. The following is a list of the major changes so far this year:
United Grain Growers Inc. of Harrington, Wash., went out of business, spinning off elevators in three counties to six competing companies. The change affected 750 United Grain farmers.
Rockford Grain Growers Inc. sold to Cenex Supply & Marketing Inc., a private subsidiary of Cenex Inc. of St. Paul, Minn. The change affected 390 Rockford Grain farmers.
Two Rockford elevators in Spokane and Fairfield also were sold to Northwest Pea and Bean Co. of Spokane. Northwest Pea leased the Spokane elevator to Rosalia Producers Inc.
Sun Country Storage Corp., in Othello, Wash., sold to Union Elevator & Warehouse Co. of Lind, Wash., affecting about 100 Sun Country farmers.
Clarkston (Wash.) Grain Terminal Inc., sold to Lewis-Clark Terminal Association Inc. in Lewiston, Idaho, affecting 500 to 1,000 Clarkston Grain farmers.
Connell Grain Growers Inc. leased its Kahlotus, Wash., elevator to RR Warehouse Inc., a joint venture of Ritzville Warehouse Co. and Reardan Grain Growers Inc. No farmers have been using the Kahlotus facility in recent years, Connell officials said.
