Dollar Gains Against Yen, Mark

The dollar moved higher Tuesday, recovering from a record low vs. the Japanese yen in Asian dealings, as speculation grew that the United States would intervene again this week to aid the ailing currency.

Analysts said the dollar was supported by purchases in U.S. trading that followed the Federal Reserve’s massive dollar-buying spree on Monday. Traders estimated the Fed sold yen and German marks and purchased an estimated $1.5 billion to $2 billion.

In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 86.21 yen, up from 86.13 late Monday.

The dollar also was changing hands in New York at 1.3785 marks, up from 1.3725.
