Bear Season
Opening day for black bear season in Idaho is Saturday and Idaho Fish and Wildlife would like to remind hunters to purchase their tags before the season starts due to a four-day waiting period to use the tag.
Hunters should also be advised that certain units in the Clearwater Region are open to use of bait and dogs while others are not, and bait cannot be placed prior to Saturday.
Hunters still need to bring skulls and hides into regional offices to have one of the premolar teeth pulled and the pelt tagged. Hunters should keep in mind the recent regulation change regarding the removal of bear meat from the field.
Idaho Fish and Game urges hunters to use extreme caution when preparing bear meat for consumption by humans or pets as bears are known carriers of the Trichinella spiralis worm that causes Trichinosis, a painful and sometimes fatal disease.
Cooking the meat for at least 30 minutes at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or deep freezing at 5 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 days should kill the parasite.
