Real Madrid Wins Title

Real Madrid, behind 23 points from Arvidas Sabonis, defeated Olympiakos of Greece 73-61 to win an unprecedented eighth European basketball championship.

The Spanish club, which won its first title since 1980, played excellent defense and limited former NBA veteran Eddie Johnson to nine points on 3-for-14 shooting.

The loss was also the fifth in five tries in the final for Yannis Ioannidis, coach of Olympiakos.
