Rogers Tops Softball, Baseball Standings

University (4-2) committed six errors that Rogers was able to turn into four runs, allowing the Pirates to escape with a 6-3 Greater Spokane League softball victory Friday at University.

The win leaves Rogers (6-1) alone atop the standings, one win ahead of second-place Mead (5-1).

In other action, Shadle Park bested Gonzaga Prep 6-5 and Central Valley edged Lewis and Clark 4-3.

All of the games were make-ups of Thursday’s rainouts.

Traci Moore (6-1) struck out five Titan batters and helped her own cause by stroking a run-scoring single in the second inning.

Jamie Fox fell to 4-2 for U-Hi, despite striking out four Pirates, surrendering only three hits and driving in two runs with a sixth-inning double.

At Shadle Park, Angelina DeMaine’s ground ball to first base allowed Becky Alberts to slide safely under the catcher’s tag with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Highlanders (2-5) their second win of the season.

Alberts, who has been the pitcher of record in every Shadle decision, picked up the win on the mound.

Jen Austin pounded out a pair of hits to lead the Bullpups (3-3).

At Lewis and Clark, two errors led to all four Central Valley runs and the Bears’ victory.

CV (4-3) scored two runs in each of the first two innings. The first two runs scored on a dropped fly ball and the second two on a hit and a throwing error. Tori Mills scattered four hits on the mound to make the runs stand up.

Haley Anderson finished 2 for 3 with a run scored for the Tigers (1-5).

Baseball

Brandon Svelmoe knocked in two runs with a double during a seven-run fourth inning as University won 9-2 at Shadle Park (5-2) in a make-up of Thursday’s rainout.

In other make-up action, Rogers rallied to edge Gonzaga Prep 7-6, Ferris scored a wild 11-10 decision over North Central and Central Valley defeated Lewis and Clark 6-4.

Scott Asan went 3 for 4, including a double, and drove in two runs for the Titans, who improved to 4-2.

Andy Furlott went the distance for U-Hi on the mound, striking out six and walking two to keep his record perfect at 3-0.

At Rogers, Jeremy Bailey came on to pinch-run for Matt Miethe and scored from second base on a ground ball up the middle of the infield to complete a Pirate comeback that saw Rogers erase a 6-0 Bullpup lead to move into first place with Shadle at 5-1.

Bailey was stealing third on the play and was able to score after the Prep second baseman booted the grounder.

Prep’s Andy Potter struck out nine batters before the Pirates were able to get to him for three runs in the sixth inning. The Bullpups fell to 4-2.

At Ferris, the Saxons (3-3) scored all 11 runs in the second and third innings and Ryan McClenny came on to pitch in the seventh to hold off a five-run NC rally for the win.

After falling behind 11-5, the Indians (2-4) rallied for five runs on five hits, the big one a two-run single by Ryan Corligano. However, Saxon catcher Robert Woodside threw Corligano out at second on an attempted steal to end the threat and the game.

Adam Sahnow’s double with two outs in the third inning drove in the final two runs during a six-run Ferris outburst and Chad Johnson’s double scored three to provide the big hit of the five-run second.

At Hart Field, CV (3-4) broke open a close ball game with a five-run outburst, which ultimately provided pitchers R.J. Del Mese (1-2) and Dave Frank with all the offensive support they would need to get past LC (0-6).

Jeremy Nesbitt’s two-run double and Eric Eigenhuis’ two-run single keyed the Bears’ third-inning rally.
