Hall-Led Lakeland Earns Split With Lc
Lakeland and Lake City split a non-league softball doubleheader Thursday at Lakeland.
Lakeland won the first game 1-0 before Lake City rebounded to win the nightcap 7-3.
In the opener, Lakeland (7-2) pitcher Monica Hall threw a onehitter and struck out seven to hand Lake City its first loss of the season.
Robin Zyckek’s RBI single scored Melissa Holt for the only run of the game.
In game two, Lake City’s Laura Tolzman and Cynthia Davidson each had two hits, and Lake City scored four times in the fourth inning and three times in the seventh for all of its runs.
Baseball
Host St. Maries dumped Priest River 10-0 in an Intermountain League game, and Wallace beat visiting Bonners Ferry 5-2 in a nonleague game.
In just his second outing of the year, St. Maries pitcher John Dawson pitched a two-hitter, struck out five and issued just one walk for his first victory of the season.
Dawson had a no-hitter going, but that was spoiled in the fifth inning. St. Maries scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Lumberjacks (1-1 IML, 2-3 overall) 10-runned the Spartans (0-2, 2-4).
Track and field
The Clarkston boys established themselves as early favorites to win the Frontier League championship by defeating West Valley.
Adam Johnson captured wins in the 200 (24.1), 400 (52.2) and 1,600 relay (3:37.5) as the visiting Bantams cruised to an 81-64 victory.
Darin Larson was a double winner for Clarkston with his times in the 110 high hurdles (16.1) and 300 low hurdles (43.2).
The Eagles’ Vinnie Pecht threw a league best 141-2 in the discus, while teammate Clayton Homes earned wins in the 1,600 (4:43.1) and 3,200 (10:24.2).
At Cheney, Pat Ferguson was a triple winner with victories in the high jump (6-0), long jump (20-6) and triple jump (40-7) to lead East Valley past the Blackhawks 104-41.
Rob Shogren tied his leagueleading time in the 300 low hurdles (42.5) for the Knights, while the Blackhawks’ Trace Dotson broke his own league-best mark with a 2:04.1 in the 800.
In girls action, West Valley established four league bests as the Eagles crushed Clarkston 102-39.
Kaci Stansbury set a West Valley school record with her throw of 136-1 in the discus, shattering her previous season-best mark by 5 feet.
