Trio Leads Birdie Assault

Brad Faxon, Steve Lowery and Vijay Singh led the birdie assault on the normally difficult Forest Oaks Country Club course, carding 7-under-par 65s to share the first-round lead of the Greater Greensboro Open.

Only eight lower rounds have been shot on the 6,958-yard layout since the $1.5 million tournament moved here in 1977. Ten eagles, including two aces, and more than 530 birdies were recorded by the 156-player field.

One shot back is the game’s hottest player, Davis Love III.
