Undefeated Mead Frustrates University Again, 3-0

GSL soccer

University’s soccer team may one day find a way to score against Mead. Until that day comes, the Titans will have to find solace in the fact that they at least play hard against the Panthers.

The Mead boys beat the Titans 3-0 at Mead in a Saturday afternoon game.

In other GSL games, North Central beat Shadle Park 1-0, Central Valley beat Rogers 3-0 and Lewis and Clark beat Ferris 1-0.

As far as Mead and University are concerned, just for the record:

In the 10 games the two teams have played against each other since 1991, Mead has held University scoreless six times.

University hasn’t scored a goal against Mead in two seasons.

The Panthers own a 9-0-1 record against the Titans since 1991.

Mead has outscored University 27-6 since 1991.

About Mead, University coach Daman Hagcrott said: “When you give them an opportunity, they put the game away. You can’t make mistakes against them. When you do that, they make you pay.”

The Panthers didn’t waste any time cashing in against U-Hi.

Jim Morton scored at the 11:30 mark off a pass from Jeremy Keesecker. Twenty minutes later Ben Brodsky rifled a shot past U-Hi goalie Richie Bernal on a penalty kick just before intermission.

Morton added another goal off a pass from Ryan Valentine just a minute before the game ended.

Mead coach Dick Cullen was pleased not only with his team’s win, but also with the way it won the game.

“The key to this team is that it is growing as a unit,” Cullen said. “We’re really committed to working really hard. Today is a pretty hot day and you’ve got a tough team in here like University. I thought they responded well.”

So here it is again, the dog days of the GSL, and Mead (12-0-1-0, 38 points) is attempting to grab another league title.

Monday, the Panthers travel to Ferris (2-9-1-1, 9) and will then take on second place Gonzaga Prep (11-0-0-2, 35) Wednesday on the Bullpups’ home turf. Earlier this season, Mead beat G-Prep 3-2 in a thrilling shootout at Mead Junior High.

But before Wednesday, Cullen said he and his team will focus on Ferris and Ferris only. “We’re not into the business of looking past teams,” Cullen said.

“Earlier this season, Ferris gave us a tough game. We’re on the road this week. It’s just best for us to focus on one game at a time.”

At North Central, the Indians’ (6-3-2-2, 24) Sean Merritt scored at the 23-minute mark of the first half for the lone goal of the game.

NC’s Paul Johnson rifled shot from 12 yards out that hit the right post. Merritt responded by beating a Shadle Park defender to the ball and punching it in.

The Highlanders are 5-6-0-2, 17.

At Hart Field, Aaron Sweatt scored for LC (6-5-2-0, 22) as the Tigers blanked Ferris.

At Rogers, CV’s Marc Caldwell and John Graves both had goals on headers off throwins. CV is 3-10-0-1, 10. Rogers is 0-14-0-0.
