Local Actor Keeps Busy In Hollywood

It’s nothing but work, work, work for Spokane actor Trevor St. John. And that’s the best possible news for a young actor establishing a name for himself in Hollywood.

St. John, 23, will appear in a central role in tonight’s episode of “Murder, She Wrote” at 8 p.m. on CBS. The story is about a murder in a prep school. St. John plays the obligatory “red herring” character.

This is St. John’s second network appearance of the year. He also played one of the sons in “Serving In Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story” starring Glenn Close.

St. John also has a substantial role as a submarine missile launcher in “Crimson Tide,” the Gene HackmanDenzel Washington thriller due out May 12.

And if Gene and Denzel aren’t big enough stars to impress you, then how about this: St. John is also starting work next week on a Pauly Shore movie. Talk about a cinema legend.

St. John is a 1989 graduate of West Valley High School and a 1993 graduate of Whitworth College.

The big merger

KXLY’s purchase of KZZU-FM and KTRW-AM, announced on Thursday, won’t become final until the FCC approves it in the fall.

When approval comes, listeners will probably not notice any change in KZZU-FM’s Top 40 format.

“They love The Zoo and want to keep it exactly they way it is,” said Brian Paul, general manager of KZZU-FM and KTRW-AM.

KTRW-AM will remain an allsports station, but will no doubt be beefed up by KXLY’s sports resources. KTRW-AM may also help ease KXLY’s scheduling problems, caused by the fact that KXLY is the home station for the Sonics, Seahawks and Mariners.

Great headlines

While I was looking back through old newspaper clippings about the old Coliseum, I came across these priceless headlines:

“It Was A Great Night for Spokane Hepcats” - Spokesman-Review, June 26, 1956, review of Bill Haley and the Comets concert.

“Gay Liberace Wins Hearts of Thousands in Show Here” - Spokesman-Review, April 11, 1955, review of Liberace concert.

Carr return

Spokane TV viewers have long memories, as anchor-reporter Bev Carr has discovered.

“I’m amazed that people still remember me,” said Carr. “After all, it’s been nine years.”

She has been gone from Spokane TV since 1986, when she left KREM2 after seven years as anchor. She returned a few months ago, this time as weekend anchor at KHQ-6.

In the interim, she was an anchor at the NBC affiliate in New Orleans and then at an Albuquerque station. After she lost her job in Albuquerque in 1992 (a victim of low ratings) she became a stockbroker.

“I got to the point where I was burned out,” she said.

But then, when KHQ-6 beckoned, she decided to return to the field.

“For one thing, I found out I wasn’t a salesperson,” she said. “And I said, well, I’ve had my three years off. It’s time to get back into it. It never leaves your blood.”

Remember Ira Joe?

Speaking of former Spokane TV personalities, Ira Joe Fisher, the hugely popular weathercaster at KHQ-6 from 1970 to 1980, is making yet another move in the Big Apple.

He is moving from WNBC, the main NBC station in New York, to WCBS, the main CBS station. He will be the weekend weather anchor and a feature reporter on weekdays.

Fisher is an “enormous success” in New York, recognized whenever he walks the streets of Manhattan, according to columnist Nick Clooney of the Cincinnati Post (Fisher also had a stint in Cincinnati TV, right after he left Spokane).

He began his New York career with WABC, which means he has now worked for all three network flagship stations in New York.

Radio stations

As you may have noticed, we no longer run the radio listings every week. Yes, as a matter of fact, this irritates me, too, especially when I’m trying to program my car stereo.

So, as a Spotlight public service, I will run it here today. Clip it out and save it. You never know when you’ll get another chance (although we’ll be happy to mail you one; just call 459-5485):
