Holt Makes Match Play

Two Eastern Washington golfers, including Britney Holt of Spokane, have qualified for match play in the 47th U.S. Girls Junior Championships in Longmeadow, Mass.

Holt and Taya Battistella of Richland shot 6-over-par 78s Tuesday for 36-hole totals of 159, sharing the final qualifying spot with two others.

The low 64 advance to match play.

Beth Bauer of Valrico, Fla., Grace Park of Phoenix and Candy Hannemann of Brazil tied for first at 145.

Andy Hastings of Spokane shot a 4-over 75 as part of the Washington group that leads the Junior America’s Cup team golf tournament in Boise after one round.

Washington has a 214 total for its three lowest scorers. Nevada is second at 216. Idaho is tied for ninth among the 16 state teams with a 223.

Football

The Inland Empire Football Officials Association, with an expanded need for this fall, has put out an urgent call for new officials. No experience is necessary.

First meeting of the group that supplies officials for 31 high schools, as well as middle schools and two youth leagues, will be Monday at 7 p.m. at 514 S. Elm. Anyone interested is urged to attend. Present members are required to attend.

The mandatory Washington Interscholastic Activities Association state rules clinic will be Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Central Valley High School.
