Former Champs Ousted
Former champions Mats Wilander of Sweden and Guy Forget of France were first-round losers in the $1.8 million ATP Championship in Mason Ohio.
Wilander, the tournament winner four times in the 1980s, lost to Renzo Furlan of Italy 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Forget, the winner in 1991, lost to 16th-seeded Alberto Berasategui of Spain 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
The top eight seeds, including top-ranked Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker and two-time defending champion Michael Chang, received first-round byes and did not play Monday.
Touted as the next superstar in women’s tennis, 15-year-old Venus Williams’ hard-hitting groundstrokes proved her undoing in an error-filled 6-4, 6-1 loss to Sweden’s Asa Carlsson in the first round of the Acura Classic in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Williams lost her serve five times in the 70-minute match.
