Not So Fast Dominique
The NBA is investigating whether Dominique Wilkins signed a contract to play for a Greek team this fall without properly informing the league.
While the Boston Celtics had no interest in retaining Wilkins for next season, the Boston Globe reported that the NBA is concerned about letting a player under contract leave for an overseas team without the league being properly notified.
The Greek Basketball Federation plans to send a fax to the offices of USA Basketball on Monday morning, formally notifying them of Wilkins’ two-year, $7 million contract with Panathinaikos, and asking that they notify the NBA.
The Houston Rockets and former guard Vernon Maxwell have dropped grievances against one another, according to a television report.
“I met with Vernon and his agent and explained to them that we were sticking with our position,” Michael Goldberg, attorney for the Houston Rockets, told KRIV in Houston. “And under no circumstances would we ever pay him anything for the 95-96 season, since he breached his contract.
On July 7, Maxwell filed a grievance with the NBA after the Rockets waived him June 30. The Rockets had given Maxwell an indefinite leave of absence early in the NBA playoffs and then waived him a day before the NBA lockout began, on July 1.
He had believed he was due $2.1 million still on the last year of his contract.
