What Tangled Webs We Weave…
Dear Nancy: I am under a lot of stress these days because my position at work is being eliminated and I am not sure if I will have a job. If I am able to stay on, I will have to face a situation that I feel is unethical, unfair and probably illegal. Could this dream relate to this?
-S.C.
My husband and I are making love in the loft of an old restaurant. I notice a large spider web hanging from the rafters like a fishing net. A fly is buzzing in the web but has not yet been caught. I roll over, face down, and a huge spider, nearly the size of my Yorkshire terrier, drops onto the back of my neck. I am paralyzed with fear. “I whisper to my husband, “Are these poisonous?” He replies, “Don’t move or make any noise.”
I believe the spider is deadly. I can feel the spider’s body heat, and hear his breathing. A toddler appears, sees the spider, and screams hysterically. I feel the spider tense up and, anticipating the bite, I wake up screaming, shaking and writhing.
Dear S.C.: This dream was so disturbing it even affected me for a few days! It takes place in a loft. That hints that the dream will give us an overview of the situation. An old restaurant suggests that your work environment was at one time a place of sustenance and nurturing, but now it is dusty and dingy indicating your feelings about it have changed.
The enormous web illustrates the trap or entanglement you are about to be caught in. If you do continue to work there, will you be a part of the corrupt behavior by remaining silent? The oversized web and spider show you have a great concern for this issue.
In the dream, you roll over and face down. By doing this, you turn your back on the situation and the spider lands on your neck. The dream is warning you not to do this. Stay focused and alert at all times!
Spiders are master weavers. They create traps to catch their prey, and in a dream such as this, give us warning to be careful and watch for danger. This spider drops onto your neck and silences you. This shows that it is a direct threat to your ability to speak out. The toddler, the innocent and vulnerable part of your own nature, is the one who finally “blows the whistle,” or speaks out.
This sounds like a very frightening situation. I hope you find a comfortable solution. It may be time for a new job!
Dear Nancy: I am in my early 40s. I have a very shaky marriage that I want out of and I am taking college classes in pursuit of a degree. Lately I have been dreaming a lot about babies. I certainly don’t want more children, yet I have this dream several times a week. -Diane
I am holding a very tiny, new baby. I am nursing him and snuggling with him. I feel very loving and protective of him.
Dear Diane: Dreaming of babies is very often indicative of something new in your life. This could be the birth of a new part of yourself, a new direction or new beginnings. Babies also suggest that there is much potential for growth and you are very protective and nurturing of this new potential.
The baby may also symbolize your “true” self: your innocence and purity. Are you trying to find and develop your true self as distinct from your feelings about your life and the choices you have made?
This is a very positive dream, Diane, with promise of new beginnings for you. I wish you the best.
