Janzen Rides Birdies To Win

Compiled From Wire Services

Lee Janzen ran off four straight birdies, then sank a 6-foot putt to save par at No. 18 and beat Ernie Els by a point in the International in Castle Rock, Colo.

Janzen scored 9 points under a modified Stableford scoring system that awards players 8 points for double eagle, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, zero for par, minus-1 for bogey and minus-3 for double bogey or worse.

Els, 25, had three straight birdies of his own, and both players birdied the par-5 17th for 34-point totals.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett finished in a tie for 11th with a score of plus 22, earning $34,500.

Playing through yet another injury, Lee Trevino played a near-perfect round in the Northville Long Island Classic to end a yearlong winless streak and break the senior tour’s victory record.

Trevino, 55, who will take the next three weeks off to rest a right shoulder injury, closed with a 6-under-par 66 on the Meadow Brook Club course in Jericho, N.Y., for a four-stroke victory over Bud Allin.

In Woburn, England, Australia’s Karrie Webb won the British Women’s Open.

The 20-year-old rookie shot a 3-under-par 70 in her final round for a 14-under total of 278 - six shots ahead of former U.S. Amateur champion Jill McGill and U.S. Open champion Annika Sorenstam.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, finished with a 71 for a four-day total of 296, 18 shots back.
