Kerry Says He Won’t Use Wife’s Money

Compiled From Wire Services

Sen. John Kerry says he won’t dip into his wife’s $675 million fortune to run for re-election next year if potential rivals also promise not to use any family assets.

“But if someone else gets in with all kinds of personal money - that’s a different ball game,” the two-term Democratic senator told the Boston Sunday Globe.

Kerry, 51, married philanthropist Teresa Heinz, an heiress to the Heinz food fortune and widow of the late Sen. H. John Heinz III of Pennsylvania, in May.

According to the Federal Election Commission, a candidate for federal office can use up to half of a spouse’s assets.
