Royals Split Doubleheader

Associated Press

American League

Kansas City manager Bob Boone has seen some big innings in his days, but nothing like this.

Johnny Damon hit a bases-loaded triple in an 11-run fourth inning that led the Kansas City Royals past the Brewers 18-9 Monday night for a split of their doubleheader in Milwaukee.

“I’ve been involved in big innings like this before, on some teams where we did it regularly, too. But for our team, this is a freak thing,” said Boone, who played on some good-hitting teams in Philadelphia and California during his 19-year major league career.

The Royals tied a team record for runs in an inning reached twice before, most recently at Boston on Aug. 2, 1986. The 11 runs, all of them earned, were the most ever allowed in one inning by the Brewers.

Milwaukee won the opener 3-1 when Angel Miranda earned his first major league save by getting Jon Nunnally to hit into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Red Sox 6, Angels 4

Anaheim, Calif.

Jose Canseco hit a tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning and Boston beat California for its 20th win in 24 games.

Canseco put Boston ahead 4-3 with one out in the sixth with a home run off Brian Anderson (6-5).

White Sox 7, Tigers 3

Detroit

Robin Ventura singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and homered in the ninth, leading Chicago past Detroit.

Alex Fernandez (8-8) improved to 5-1 lifetime at Tiger Stadium and Kirk McCaskill got his second save. Mike Moore (5-13) lost his eighth straight decision and has not won in three months.

Athletics 13, Yankees 4

Oakland, Calif.

Geronimo Berroa homered, tripled and drove in three runs as Oakland scored 10 runs in the first two innings to beat error-prone New York.

The Athletics scored six unearned runs while batting around in each of the first two innings. Every A’s starter had a hit by the second inning.

Rangers 12, Twins 5

Arlington, Texas

Juan Gonzalez hit a grand slam and RBI single during an 11-run first inning that included three home runs as Texas downed Minnesota.

Rusty Greer hit a three-run homer and Benji Gil connected for a solo shot as the Rangers sent 15 batters to the plate in the opening inning against rookie pitchers Scott Klingenbeck and reliever Oscar Munoz.

Indians 7, Blue Jays 3

Toronto

Paul Sorrento homered and drove in four runs as Cleveland notched its fourth straight win.

Orel Hershiser (11-5) pitched seven innings for the Indians, allowing three runs while striking out eight and walking none. He is 4-0 in his last five starts and 6-2 since coming off the disabled list July 7.
