Major Glitch Turns Up In Computer Romance ‘Mr. Innocent’ Arrested On Credit Card Fraud Charges

Associated Press

A Dallas man who wooed an Idaho Falls woman through a national computer chat line and made plans to marry her has been arrested on a fraud charge.

Kenton Spencer Weston, who recently moved to Idaho Falls, was charged with fraudulent application for a credit card and booked into the Bonneville County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Weston was featured in newspaper articles earlier this month focusing on his then-impending marriage to Jill Ivie of Idaho Falls. The couple met in October via their computers on America Online where Weston used the screen name of “Mr. Innocent.”

They exchanged photos and met in person last Christmas. They set a wedding date for earlier this month.

Ivie declined comment Monday.

Ivie’s friend, Darrell Baldwin, became suspicious of Weston after he wanted to invest $2.1 million and set up a credit card account with Baldwin’s investment company, IM&R Investment, police reports said.

Baldwin checked out Weston’s credit applications and found inconsistencies, reports said.

“The things he was saying just didn’t seem right,” Baldwin said. “I just was suspicious and I thought he was using (Ivie). I was worried about her welfare.”

Police also found that the Social Security number listed by Weston on credit applications was issued to a man who died in 1981.

Weston told a reporter he worked for a division of CBS that prepared investigative reports, but police could not verify that.

Police have taken Weston’s fingerprints and are awaiting comparisons to check his identity and age.
