Former Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Luis Sharpe has been hospitalized in Phoenix after being shot in the arm.
A police spokesman said Sharpe, 35, and witnesses refused to provide details of the shooting, which happened around 1:30 p.m.
Sharpe, who played 13 seasons with the Cardinals, was listed in stable condition at Maricopa County Medical Center.
In what could signal a CFL retreat from Dixie, the Memphis Mad Dogs folded, with the Birmingham Barracudas possibly to follow.
Also facing assorted problems are teams in Baltimore, San Antonio and Shreveport, La.
“We have 11 teams committed to be with us for 1996,” league chairman John Tory said during the CFL Board of Governors meeting in Toronto. “The only uncertainty is with Baltimore.”
