Eastern Washington Men Fall To 0-6 After Loss To Uc Irvine

Kevin Simmons scored 16 points to lead five Anteaters in double figures as the University of UC Irvine defeated Eastern Washington 86-66 on Saturday in a non-conference men’s basketball game witnessed by 1,523 at the Bren Events Center.

Brian Keefe added 14 points for Irvine (3-1), which never trailed after Raimond Miglinieks’ 3-pointer made it 17-16 with 11:44 left in the first half.

A point guard, Miglinieks finished with 12 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. Teammates Shaun Battle and Paul Foster added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Off-guard Curtis Porter led EWU (0-6) with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes.

The Eagles, troubled by sloppy ballhandling all season, committed 18 turnovers - one fewer than their season average. EWU point guards Brett Thompson and Travis King each committed four turnovers, as did off-guard D’mitri Rideout.

Irvine, of the Big West Conference, turned it over 11 times.

Rideout entered the game shooting 40 percent from the field, but saw that figure dip to 35 percent after suffering through a 3-for-15 nightmare against Irvine.

Center Adam Dean had 10 points and seven rebounds for Big Sky Conference member EWU, hitting 4 of 5 from the field and upping his field-goal percentage to a teamleading 63.3.

In its first year under head coach Steve Aggers, EWU has faced two Pacific-10 Conference teams and two West Coast Conference contenders.

EWU’s next two opponents Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo on Monday and then Carroll College - appear less formidable. EWU hammered Cal Poly 92-40 last year.
