Vanderbilt, N.C. State Win

Sherri Sam scored 16 points and No. 4 Vanderbilt used its size and zone defense in topping fifth-ranked Virginia 72-65 in college women’s basketball.

Virginia (4-2) led 38-32 at halftime and was ahead most of the second half until Angela Gorsica’s basket with 7:16 left gave Vanderbilt (4-0) a 52-50 edge.

Jennifer Howard scored 22 points, hitting 4 of 8 3-point shots, to lead No. 14 North Carolina State (5-1) to an 83-71 victory over 24th-ranked Western Kentucky (2-3) at Bowling Green, Ky.
