Attorney Likely City Council Nominee Susan Servick Mayor’s Choice To Replace Dan English

Susan Servick, a local attorney, likely will join the City Council next week.

Current council members and other nominees confirm that Servick is Mayor Al Hassell’s pick to replace Dan English, who left in October to become Kootenai County clerk.

Hassell says he won’t announce his decision until Thursday because he has not yet gotten a reaction from all of the council members.

The council is expected to vote on the nomination at its Dec. 19 meeting.

Servick is a Coeur d’Alene native. She defends clients in civil suits for the firm of Ramsden & Lyons. Past clients include insurance companies, as well as Kootenai and Bonner counties.

She won’t comment on her possible appointment until it’s official.

But Servick said she sought the post because “it seems like a very exciting and interesting opportunity to participate in city government.”

Servick has not run for public office before. However, she has served on the Coeur d’Alene Library Board for the past four years and is chairwoman of the board.

Councilman Kevin Packard said he expects the entire council to support Servick, although some were pulling for Sam Sears.

Sears narrowly missed being elected in November.

“I know some other city councilmen supported Mr. Sears since he went through the election,” Packard said.

“I personally don’t look at it that way.

“I think the mayor had the obligation to look at all of the candidates and their qualifications.”

Sears is disappointed, “but that’s the procedure,” he said.

“The mayor had to be under tremendous pressure.”

Other nominees included attorney Scott Poorman, homemaker CarolAnn Flegel, and businesswoman Deanna Goodlander.
