Bob Errey scored two goals and the Detroit Red Wings held New Jersey to 19 shots to break a six-game losing streak against the Devils with a 3-1 victory Friday night in Detroit.

Mike Vernon stopped 18 shots as the Red Wings won their 10th straight at home and 16th in 18 games overall.

Steve Yzerman assisted on two first-period goals that gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. That stood until Errey scored an empty-netter with just 4 seconds remaining.

The New York Rangers’ 10-game unbeaten streak came to an end as Alexei Zhitnik had a goal and two assists in Buffalo’s victory.

The Rangers, 7-0-3 in their previous 10 games, lost a chance to take over the overall points leadership in the NHL. The Rangers started the night with 45, one behind Atlantic Division-leading Florida.

Brendan Shanahan had two goals and an assist to lead Hartford to a victory over Colorado.

Despite two goals by Colorado’s Mike Keane, the Whalers snapped a threegame losing streak and won for just the second time in nine games.

Winnipeg’s Deron Quint scored two goals in 4 seconds and Teemu Selanne had four goals to lead the Jets to a victory over Edmonton.

Quint’s goals at 7:51 and 7:55 of the second period tied a 64-year-old NHL record set by Nels Stewart of the Montreal Maroons in 1931. They were the second and third goals of the season for the 19-year-old defenseman.
