Whit Women Stumble In Second Half

Whitworth, fighting to break a six-game losing streak, faded down the stretch Friday night in a 59-52 women’s basketball loss to visiting Carroll.

The Pirates (1-7) led 42-38 with 8:23 to play, but scored only two points in the next 5 minutes as Carroll went to work inside behind 6-foot center Allison George, who scored eight of her 21 points in the last 4 minutes.

Whitworth post Sheri Northington scored 21. Catherine Mason added 14 as the only other Pirate in double figures.

Mark Hegbloom grabbed eight rebounds and scored 17 points to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane past South Puget Sound Community College in the first round of an NWAACC Crossover Tournament in Olympia.

Mike Ferrante had six assists and 16 points for the Sasquatch (5-2), who play Shoreline in the semifinals tonight at 8.

CCS was just 2-10 from 3-point range, but the Sasquatch outrebounded the Clippers 29-25.
