Wood Gets 10 Years - Again Fernwood Man Convicted A Second Time Of Killing Toddler

Winda Benedetti Staff Writer

A Fernwood, Idaho, man was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for injuring a girl who died five years ago.

It was the second time he’s been given that sentence.

Jehn Wood, 34, will be eligible for parole after four years, Judge Craig Kosonen ordered Friday. Wood will also receive credit for time served.

In November, a jury found Wood guilty of felony injury to a child. It was the second time he’s been found guilty on the charge.

Two-year-old Tasha Almandinger died in November 1990.

Wood originally was convicted of injuring her in December 1992.

The child’s mother, Pamela Almandinger, was dating Wood at the time and later married him.

Pamela Almandinger testified in the first trial that she left the girl alone with Wood for a few minutes.

An autopsy showed that the toddler died of a blow to the head, causing bleeding and swelling of the brain.

Although there were no witnesses, Wood was accused of beating the girl. Wood has denied hitting the girl and instead maintains she choked on a grape, collapsed on the floor and he tried to revive her by shaking her.

In 1992, a jury found him guilty of injury to a child. Judge Kosonen sentenced him to 10 years in prison, making him not eligible for parole until he had served seven of those years.

But in August 1994, after Wood had spent about a year and a half behind bars, the Idaho State Court of Appeals overturned his conviction saying certain testimony should not have been allowed at the trial.

He was retried last month without that testimony and again found guilty.

Wood is being held at the Benewah County Jail while waiting to be transported to prison in Boise.
