Beatles Are Still Beating Everybody

The Hollywood Reporter

The Beatles didn’t need help from anyone to stomp the competition and maintain the No. 1 slot at the nation’s retailers with sales of 404,000 copies of “The Beatles Anthology Vol. 1,” off a bit from last week’s 453,000.

Figuring a $30 price tag on the two-CD set, the Fab Four have sold more than $51 million in albums in the past three weeks. This doesn’t count their catalog titles, which have also sprung back to life.

Last week marked the 15th anniversary of John Lennon’s death, with candlelight vigils in New York and Los Angeles and the unveiling of postage stamps in his honor. However, that attracted relatively little national media attention, not enough to explain the phenomenal sales last week. More likely, it is simply that the two-CD set is a popular Christmas gift.
