Chatfield Leads Lake City To Rout Of No. 5 Boise
Idaho boys basketball
Lake City boys basketball coach Jim Winger issued a challenge to Jon Chatfield’s teammates at halftime of Saturday afternoon’s game.
The second-year coach wanted some offensive support for the standout 6-foot-3 forward who scored all 19 of Lake City’s first-quarter points in a 70-50 victory over fifth-ranked Boise.
Chatfield hit eight of his first 11 shots from field, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Chatfield had 20 of his game-high 33 points, which equaled his previous season high, by halftime. He also grabbed nine rebounds.
“He’s a great shooter,” Braves coach George Cox said. “We take quite a bit of pride in our defense at Boise High. You’ve got to give the kid credit. He stuck it.”
The rest of the Timberwolves shot a miserable 1 of 17 from the field in the first half.
“In that first quarter Jon was really hot,” Lake City guard Jerid Keefer said. “The rest of us, we were shooting (but) they just didn’t go in.
“At halftime coach talked to us about the rest of us stepping up. We came together real well as a team.”
Keefer and point guard Mike Thompson met Winger’s challenge. The seniors combined for 26 points - 20 in the second half - and 13 assists.
Thompson boosted Lake City to a 29-26 halftime lead, drawing a foul on a desperation halfcourt shot with less than a second on the clock. Thompson’s three consecutive free throws snapped a 26-26 deadlock.
The Timberwolves started to roll after Winger called a timeout with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
Lake City (4-2) had just given up a baseline basket to junior guard Scott Erickson and an inside bank shot to senior center Tye Andersen that put Boise up 30-29.
“What are you guys doing,” Winger yelled as the team huddled.
Five minutes later, the Timberwolves had outscored the visitors 21-4 and led 52-36.
In spite of the big win for Lake City, it became an immediate afterthought for an Winger who left the gym moments after the game when he learned of his grandfather’s death.
“I thought it was a total (team) effort, especially in the second half,” Lake City assistant Dwight Wilson said on behalf of Winger.
“We didn’t have any turnovers (11 in the game, four in the second half), plus the fact we really started hitting the boards.”
Lake City (4-2) travels to Spokane on Friday to take on Mead.
