Neatness Counts, Even For A Television Detective

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

The old cliche that “a messy desk is the sign of an orderly mind” may be pure baloney. But the reverse doesn’t necessarily hold true, either.

Still, neatness continues to be associated with organization. And organization continues to be a trait prized above most others.

That’s evident in the results of a survey sponsored by the Computer Products Division of Fuji Photo Film U.S.A. Looking for the mostorganized celebrities, the survey named “Murder, She Wrote” star Angela Lansbury as the winner.

Next in line were Tony Randall, Martha Stewart, Katie Couric and David Letterman.

At the bottom of the list lurked Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld.

Loose talk

Debi Mazar on the contents of her purse: “A camera, a switchblade, lipstick and a pack of Trident blue.”

He’ll memorialize the moment by pontificating, no doubt

William Safire turns 66 today.

Thank you, Ms. Philosopher, and now we’ll take some calls

Here’s today’s O.J. Simpson note: “I think he’s guilty,” says Madonna, “but it’s our karma as a nation that he walked because we have mistreated blacks and judged them unfairly for so long.”

Better words than the necessary latex equipment

On a publicity stop in Sydney, “GoldenEye” star Pierce Brosnan was caught short, so to speak, when he was asked whether his alter ego, James Bond, was practicing safe sex in the ‘90s. “Engaging in safe sex,” Brosnan stammered. “I don’t know. I really don’t know how to answer that question. Actually I just don’t have the words. They fail me.”

Wanna hear him speak, ya gotta pay the price

Speaking of words failing someone: When Michael Jackson left Beth Israel North Hospital on Tuesday, about 50 fans were on hand to see the heavily made up (in both rouge and foundation) pop star throw a kiss, a wave and a make a peace sign - but not speak.

The business of royalty is… oh, shut up, Diana!

Tune in Tuesday for Prince Charles’ Internet debut. But don’t expect anything juicy. He’ll be addressing the fifth anniversary of his Business Leaders Forum, which brings worldwide execs together.

Their co-memoir will be titled ‘The Devil and St. Kathie Lee’

Here’s more on that flap between Kathie Lee Gifford and Howard Stern: “I think most of America can’t stand her,” says shock-jock Stern. “She has this phony-baloney quality and Pollyanna attitude that I just don’t buy.” Says Kathie Lee: “If you love God, you love people. I always pray for those who decide to be my enemy.”
