Mead Local 329 Put In Receivership

From Staff And Wire Reports

United Steelworkers of America on Monday seized control of union Local 329 at Kaiser Aluminum’s Mead plant after members gave the local’s officers a vote of no confidence.

President Jerry Miller and 10 other officers were ousted after Mead’s 1,000 Steelworkers voted down Miller’s monthly financial report, preventing officers from getting paid.

Local 329 was placed in receivership and Steelworkers sub-district director Paul Glavin appointed administrator. Glavin said he hopes to return stability to the local, but it was too early to know when new officers would be elected.

The action comes 10 months after the local inspired a turbulent eight-day strike against Kaiser by recommending against a contract proposal that the international had supported.
