Gonzaga Prep Wrestlers Alone At Top In Gsl
Gonzaga Prep is alone in first place after the third week of Greater Spokane League wrestling.
Matt Betts (275 pounds) and Mike Goularite (115) had pins and the Bullpups (3-0) picked up three forfeits in a 47-19 win at Shadle Park (0-3) on Wednesday.
Dan Short (168) and Tyler Kuhn (135) added technical falls for the Bullpups, who have never won the league title.
Sabino Hernandez (190) and Shawn Howard (122) remained unbeaten for the Highlanders. Howard beat defending state champion Cory Brannon 10-7.
G-Prep’s next rival is Mead (2-1), which notched a dramatic 32-30 win over visiting University (1-1).
U-Hi led 30-24 heading into the final two matches, but Lyle Beerbohm (141) scored a 20-8 major decision over Ed Stretch, and Shawn Gumke (148), wrestling up one weight, major decisioned Jason Burger 12-4.
Mead’s Spencer Smith (215) beat Jeff Schmedding 7-6 with a last-second escape. Smith had lost to Schmedding twice at Central Valley’s tournament.
U-Hi’s Josh Vandevanter (129) surprised Joe McClellan with a pin.
CV (2-0) stayed on Prep’s heels and dropped North Central (2-1) a notch with a 33-24 home win. Bears sophomore Courtney Brown (141) edged senior Brian Largent 16-14 to guarantee the win.
Bob Perkes (275) had the lone pin for CV, which bumped three weights to fill in for injured John Jolley at 190. The Indians had three pins, including Nick Stewart (101).
Ferris is also at 2-1 after a 35-24 home win over Rogers (0-3). Eric Simmons (168), Ty Williams (178) Chris Cluever (275) and Israel Eaton (122) had the Saxons’ pins. Cougar Devereaux had Williams on his back before the pin.
Xung Lam (101) of Ferris had a takedown in overtime to beat Anthony Kelp 14-12. James Dawe (141) of Rogers trailed Chris Gay 8-5 in the third period before tying the match and winning 10-9 in OT.
