The Slice No, ‘Godzilla Meets Bambi’ Won’t Cut It

Remember, it’s the law in Spokane.

If you are going to watch TV today, it has to be a Bing Crosby movie.

Readers report more great smells: Cinnabon, Domini’s popcorn, the aroma of coffee roasting anywhere downwind of Craven’s, the diesel shop at the train yard, Nordstrom, being at the Spokane Symphony office when nearby Crickets restaurant is baking up a storm, the Magic Lantern when Europa is baking downstairs, and garlic croutons being prepared at the Metro Cafe.

No need for a show of hands: Every Christmas, Dave and Shannon Holt recall something their 28-year-old son, John, said back when he was 4.

“I had some last minute-shopping to do, so John and I were off,” his mom recalled. “At our last stop we were in a long line. As our turn came and I handed the clerk my credit card, John looked up at me and said ‘Is that the one Dad says is up to the hilt?”’

Overheard last week in a South Hill store (a man talking to a woman about crystal dishes): “Two weeks ago, they were 20 percent off. Last week, they were 30 percent off. Now they’re 40 percent off. I’m sure if you wait till the weekend, they will be 60 percent off. And if you wait till Dec. 26, Lamont’s will pay you to take them off their hands.” - submitted by Karen Montecucco

Another secular triumph: Mary Jean Tranfo told us about a memorable Christmas service years ago at a church in tiny Keuterville, Idaho. There wasn’t a choir, so the plan was to play a record featuring an appropriate seasonal hymn. But the person handling that assignment messed up and put on “Here Comes Santa Claus” instead.

Boomerang present: Juanita Quick once donated a pair of candle holders to a church bazaar. And…hey, no fair getting ahead of us…her young son purchased them and gave them to her for Christmas.

Today’s Slice question: What would The Slice do without the talented, good-looking readers whose ideas and observations fill up this column?

To tell you the truth, we don’t even want to think about it.

Merry Christmas.
