Bailey Propels Bruins To Fifth Straight Victory

From Wire Reports

Pac-10

Forced into the role of point guard, Toby Bailey is finding advantages to hanging around the perimeter.

Last season, Bailey’s trademark became his driving, twisting moves to the basket. With Cameron Dollar relegated to a reserve role at UCLA while he nurses bandaged hands, Bailey is running the point and discovering lots of room to toss up 3-pointers.

Bailey scored 20 points and tied his career high with five 3-pointers as No. 23 UCLA concluded its preconference schedule with its fifth straight victory, 92-58 over San Francisco on Saturday in Los Angeles.

“I’ve always shot 3s well. It just so happens, I’m one of the go-to guys,” he said. “I’m getting better looks at the basket this year, so I’m feeling more confident.”

After losing three of their first five games, the defending national champion Bruins (7-3) have put together their longest winning streak of the season heading into their Pac-10 opener Thursday against Washington State in the Spokane Arena.

The Bruins were well-rested, having had a week off since their victory at UNLV last Saturday. San Francisco (6-5) was playing its fourth game in five days and coming off a trip from New Orleans on Friday.

Still, the Dons trailed by just eight at the break despite 14-of-30 shooting and not getting to the foul line in the first half.

Oregon 75, Oregon State 50

Kyle Milling had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Ducks past the Beavers in the consolation game of the Ford Far West Classic in Portland.

Oregon (7-4) also got 12 points from Jamar Curry. OSU (2-6) was led by Markee Brown’s 12 points.

(9) Arizona 79, Rutgers 70

Miles Simon scored 26 points to lead the Wildcats past the Scarlet Knights in the championship game of the Fiesta Bowl Classic, coach Lute Olson’s 300th victory at the school.

Arizona (10-1) took control in the first half and held off a late Rutgers (4-5) rally to remain unbeaten in 11 versions of the tournament it hosts.

Olson is 300-95 at Arizona, 491-188 in his career.

Damon Santiago paced Rutgers with 27 points.

Stanford 65, Harvard 59

Brevin Knight scored all 26 of his points in the second half to lead the Cardinal (6-2) past the visiting Crimson (5-5).

Knight, the starting point guard, who averages 14 points a game, played only 8 minutes in the first half and was 0 for 2 from the field and had two turnovers.

After a basket by Harvard’s Kyle Snowden tied the game with 1:45 remaining, Knight sank a twisting, driving layin to put the Cardinal ahead for good.

Detroit Mercy 71, Arizona St. 66

Carl Pickett scored 20 points and Brian Alexander added 13 points and 12 rebounds as the Titans beat the Sun Devils on their home court.

The victory in the championship game of the ASU-Tribune Classic gave the Titans (8-2) a first. It snapped Arizona State’s 13-game winning streak in its holiday tournament. The Sun Devils (5-3) hadn’t lost in the classic under seventh-year coach Bill Frieder.

Rhode Island 87, USC 74

Josh King scored 24 points, Tyson Wheeler added 21 and Chad Thomas had 20 as the Rams (7-3) held off several rallies to beat the Trojans (7-4) in the third-place game of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.

Jaha Wilson led USC with 18 points.
